SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. – The Saint Michael's College
women's ice hockey team (3-10 overall, 2-6 ECAC East) was
defeated on Saturday by Salve Regina University (3-11, 1-10), 5-4,
in ECAC East action at Cairns Arena.
For the Purple Knights, sophomore Gabrielle Bourgeois (New
Haven, Vt./ Middlebury Union) scored three goals, and
junior Katie Grable (Vista, Calif./Anaheim Lady
Ducks) contributed a goal and an assist, while freshman
Melanie Cullen (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton Academy)
turned aside 15 shots.
For the Seahawks, sophomore Aimee Provencher
(Manchester, N.H./Brewster Academy) scored a pair of goals
and helped out on another, while freshman
Caitlin Campbell (Hingham,
Mass./Archbishop Williams) lit the lamp twice and
classmate Mariel Guay (North Scituate, R.I./Proctor
Academy) had both a goal and an assist. Freshman
Michelle Chabot (Waterboro, Maine/The
Gunnery) stopped 31 shots en route to the team's
first conference victory of the season.
Saint Michael's jumped out on top just 56 seconds into the contest
when Bourgeois scored, thanks to assists from
senior Michelle Miaskiewicz (Salem,
Mass./North Shore Vipers) and junior Melissa Gagne
(Eliot, Maine/Berwick Academy). With the assist,
Miaskiewicz moved past Meg Lyons
'05 for sole possession of the program record in
that category, with 40. At the 6:12 mark, the Purple Knights jumped
out to a 2-0 lead when Grable scored her first
goal of the season, with help from Bourgeois. The
Seahawks, however, scored five unanswered goals, including two each
by Provencher and Campbell, and
that proved to be an insurmountable total for Saint
Michael's, who dropped its ninth contest in a row.
Saint Michael's will return to action on Sunday when they
will host Manhattanville College at 3:20 p.m. while Salve Regina
plays again on Friday with a home match-up with New England College
at 6 p.m.
