SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. – The Saint Michael's College
women's ice hockey team (3-11, 2-7 ECAC East) lost to
Manhattanville College (11-2, 9-1 ECAC East), 11-2, on Sunday in
ECAC East action at Cairns Arena.
For the Purple Knights, senior Michelle
Miaskiewicz (Salem, Mass./North Shore
Vipers) scored a pair of goals, while classmate and fellow
assistant captain Annice Mason (Berlin, Vt./U-32)
made 30 saves.
For the Valiants, sophomore Amanda Nonis (Brampton,
Ontario/Etobicoke Dolphins) and freshman Danielle
Nagymarosi (Uxbridge, Ontario/Durham)
each scored a pair of goals and assisted on two more, while
sophomore Liane Ortis (Mississauga, Ontario/Missassauga
Chiefs) stopped three shots.
Manhattanville, ranked fourth nationally in the most recent
uscho.com Division III Women's Poll, controlled play
throughout the game, but it was Saint Michael's that drew first
blood, when Miaskiewicz scored on the team's
first and only shot on goal in the opening period. Thanks to
assists from sophomore Gabrielle Bourgeois (New Haven, Vt./
Middlebury Union) and junior Melissa Gagne (Eliot,
Maine/Berwick Academy), the goal was the first ever for
the Purple Knights against their opponent, having been shutout in
each of their eight previous contests against the Valiants, dating
back to the integration of the program during the 2000-01
season.
At the 17:27 mark of the first period, just under a minute into
sophomore Tracy MacGregor's (Danvers, Mass./Proctor
Academy) checking penalty, junior Darcie Jarvis
(Newmarket, Ontario/Aurora Panthers) took a shot on goal
that was deflected by senior Ashley Trimble (Carleton
Place, Ontario/Brewster Academy). Upon the puck's
redirection, it seemed as though it had gotten itself wedged
between Mason's pads, but before it drew a
whistle, it became dislodged and fell across the line to even the
score at one.
Senior Jesse Garner's (Idaho Falls,
Idaho/Aspen) wrap around goal 5:02 into the second period,
followed up by Nonis' eventual game winner
less than three minutes later woke up Manhattanville's potent
offense, who went on to score five goals in each of the final two
periods, outshooting the host Purple Knights by a total of
41-5.
Saint Michael's returns to action on Friday when they travel to the
College of the Holy Cross for a 7 p.m. match-up, while
Manhattanville will host Saint Anslem College on Saturday at 3
p.m.
