SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. – The Saint Michael's College
women's ice hockey team (4-15, 3-10 ECAC East) was defeated
by the University of Massachusetts Boston (10-5-1, 7-5 ECAC East),
4-2, Friday night at Cairns Arena.
For the Beacons, junior Andrea Ciarletta (Watertown,
Mass./Watertown) scored a pair of goals and sophomore
Lauren O'Connor (Everett, Mass./Everett)
notched a goal and an assist, while senior Amanda Boucher
(Billerica, Mass./Matignon) stopped nine shots.
For the Purple Knights, sophomores Gabrielle Bourgeois
(New Haven,
Vt./Middlebury Union)
and Tracy MacGregor
(Danvers,
Mass./Proctor
Academy) scored and freshman
Kristen Salierno
(Ridgefield,
Conn./Connecticut
Stars) made 23 saves in net.
Saint Michael's, who entered the evening having been
outscored 17-0 over its past two games with UMass Boston, opened
the night's scoring 7:16 into the contest when
Bourgeois skated into the offensive zone being
trailed by senior Michelle Miaskiewicz (Salem, Mass./North
Shore Vipers). Bourgeois dumped the puck
to the assistant captain, who quickly returned the disc to the
sophomore who one-timed the pass into the net.
Ciarletta responded just over two minutes later,
sending a shot into the top right corner of the net, thanks to an
assist from sophomore Audrey Deguire
(Milford,
Mass./Phillips
Andover). The Beacons pulled
ahead at the 13:13 mark, when sophomore Casey Turner
(Melrose,
Mass./Charles
River) took the puck from behind the
Purple Knights' and completed a wrap-around to score an
unassisted goal. Saint Michael's evened the score 1:51 later, when
freshman Shannon Murphy
(Wellesley,
Mass./Wellesley) found an open
MacGregor skating at the red line. Streaking
towards the net, MacGregor provoked
Boucher to commit first, scoring on the breakaway,
to end the period's scoring.
O'Connor tallied what proved to be the game winner
5:19 into the second frame, thanks to an assist by senior
Kristin Wilson (Grand
Forks, N.D./University of
Vermont), and helped
Ciarletta score an insurance goal 3:23 later,
ensuring the Beacons' sixth straight victory over the Purple
Knights.
Saint Michael's will play again on Saturday afternoon as they host
the University of Southern Maine at 3 p.m., while UMass Boston
faces off against Castleton State on Saturday at 7 p.m.
