SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. –.The Saint Michael's College
women's ice hockey team (4-16, 3-12 ECAC East) dropped its
fourth straight contest, falling to the University of Southern
Maine (5-15, 5-9 ECAC East), 4-2, Saturday afternoon at Cairns
Arena.
For the Huskies, senior Caitlin Cashman (Tariffville,
Conn./Connecticut Crusaders) scored the game winner and
freshman Emily Barrett (Dartmouth,
Mass./Dartmouth) made 16 saves.
For the Purple Knights, freshman Jess Tourville (Baltimore,
Vt./Springfield) scored a pair of goals, while classmate
Melanie Cullen (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton
Academy) stopped 26 shots in net.
Saint Michael's jumped out on top, taking advantage of both
Southern Maine penalties over the first 20 minutes. Jessica
Broccoli (Mahopac, N.Y./Sound Shore Warriors), who
committed both infractions, was called for interference just 54
seconds into the game, which set up
Tourville's unassisted goal at the 2:29
mark. A body check call on Broccoli at 5:25, once
again put the Huskies on the penalty kill, and once again
Tourville took advantage, when sophomore
Brittany O'Brien (Stowe, Vt./Stowe) took a
shot on net that sent Barrett to the ice. Freshman
Anne Altieri (Stamford, Conn./Millbrook School)
grabbed the rebound and sent a one-timing pass to
Tourville, who was waiting on the opposite side of
the crease. Before the goaltender could regroup, the freshman
forward slapped the puck into the back of the net, giving her team
a two goal advantage.
The Purple Knights went scoreless over their next seven power plays
chances, however, and the Huskies went three-for-seven. At the 1:33
mark of the second frame, just 10 seconds into an
Altieri hooking penalty, freshman Megan
Irving (Cumberland, Maine/Hebron Academy) received a pass
from sophomore Amy McNally (East Waterboro,
Maine/Massabesic), and was able to put her team on the
board. Junior Kristin Pappolla (North Port, Fla./New
Hampshire Selects) evened the score 8:42 into the period,
thanks to assists from classmate Caitlin Tassone (Woburn,
Mass./Arlington Catholic) and senior Meaghan
Barnaby (Hampton, N.H./Governor Dummer). Exactly six
minutes later, Cashman put Southern Maine up for
good, scoring on the power play with help from junior Jenna
Wasylak (Dunstable, Mass./Kimball Union).
The Huskies added some insurance, tallying another five-on-four
goal, 10:58 into the third period, when Broccoli
gathered a pass from junior Jennifer Cordone (Fulton,
N.Y./Syracuse Stars) at the top of the right face-off
circle. With assists credited to Cordone and
Barnaby, the junior defenseman scored on a
wrist-shot that sailed past Cullen's right
side.
With the loss, Saint Michael's dropped its 10th
straight contest to Southern Maine, and was unable to avenge a 3-0
loss that took place earlier this season in Gorham, Maine.
The Purple Knights will close out their home schedule next
weekend with a Friday evening contest against New England College
at 7 p.m., followed by a 3 p.m. match-up with Saint Anselm College
on Saturday. The Huskies, meanwhile, will play Castleton State on
Sunday at 2 p.m.
