SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College women's ice
hockey team (2-0-1, 2-0-1 ECAC East) earned its first-ever victory
versus the University of Massachusetts Boston, besting the Beacons,
6-3, in ECAC East action on Friday at Cairns Arena.
For Saint Michael's, sophomore Meghan Sweezey
(Lynnfield,
Mass./Lynnfield) netted a pair of
power play goals, while senior Gabrielle Bourgeois
(New Haven,
Vt./Middlebury Union) and
sophomore Kristi Reardon (Pal Beach Gardens, Fla./Tabor
Academy) each added a goal and two assists. Sophomore
Desiree Biron (Bow, N.H./Bow) tallied the
game-winning goal and added an assist, while junior Melanie
Cullen (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton
Academy) stopped 35 shots to earn the win in net.
For UMass Boston (2-3, 1-3 ECAC East) freshman Rachel Sousa
(Woburn,
Mass.) tallied two goals, while
sophomore Amanda Cianciulli
(Billerica,
Mass.) and freshman
Kristine Faffley
(Westmoreland,
N.Y.) chipped in with two assists
apiece. Junior Jessica Sams
(Bellingham,
Mass.) recorded 28 saves in net
in defeat.
Saint Michael's opened the scoring 3:47 into the contest on a power
play goal from Sweezey, but UMass Boston countered 10 minutes later
on a power play tally from Sousa. The Purple Knights took the lead
for good with two goals late in the second period, as Reardon and
Sweezey lit the lamp with power play tallies.
UMass Boston cut the deficit to 3-2 just 13 seconds into the third
period on a 5-on-3 goal from sophomore Maria Nasta
(Andover, Mass.), but Biron restored Saint Michael's
two-goal lead seven minutes later with what proved to be the
game-winner. The Beacons again cut their deficit to one goal with
eight minutes left in regulation, but goals in the final 5:23 by
Bourgeois and sophomore Crystal Sarno (Stoneham,
Mass./Canterbury School) sealed the victory as the Purple
Knight improve to 1-8 all-time versus UMass Boston
Saint Michael's returns to action on Saturday, as the Purple
Knights take on Saint Anselm College at 3 p.m. at Cairns Arena.
