Women's Hockey Falls To Colby, 5-0, At SMC Holiday Tournament

 

SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. - Colby College and Elmira College earned victories on Friday at the third annual Saint Michael's College Holiday Tournament at Cairns Arena. In the opener, Elmira posted a 4-0 win versus Norwich University, and in the nightcap, Colby skated to a 5-0 victory versus the host Purple Knights.  

            In the night game, Colby (3-3-2) received 25 saves from junior Lacey Brown (Freeport, Maine) and two saves from classmate Shelley Payne (Pelham, N.Y.) to earn the combined shutout win. Fellow junior Laura Anning (Ingramport, NS) netted two third-period goals to seal the win for the Mules, while classmates Liz Osgood (North Andover, Mass.) and Becky Julian (South Windsor, Conn.), along with freshman Elissa Kurtz (Miami, Fla.), each scored a goal.

            For Saint Michael's (2-4-1), junior Melanie Cullen (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) recorded 39 saves.

            In game one, junior Kayla Coady (Charlottetown, PEI) scored twice in the first period, and classmate Jamie Huntley (La Jolla, Calif.) added a pair of second-period goals, as sixth-ranked Elmira (9-2-0) earned the shutout victory. Sophomore Jenna McCall (Thamesford, Ont.) tallied two assists for the Soaring Eagles, while senior Cara McGurry (Winnipeg, Man.) stopped 15 shots for the shutout win.

            For Norwich (3-3-1), freshman Cindy Fortin (Quebec City, Que.) turned aside 43 of 47 shots.

            The Saint Michael's Holiday Tournament concludes on Saturday, as Colby and Elmira square off at 1 p.m. in a predetermined format, followed by Saint Michael's and Norwich at 4 p.m.
