SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. - Elmira College and Norwich University
earned victories on Saturday to complete play at the third annual
Saint Michael's College Holiday Tournament at Cairns Arena. In the
opener, Elmira won the tournament with a 7-4 comeback victory
versus Colby College, and in the nightcap, Norwich bested its
in-state rival, the host Purple Knights, 7-1, to win the Third
Place Game.
In the second game, Norwich (4-3-1) scored three goals in the first
period and never looked back in winning the first-ever meeting
between the in-state rivals. Freshman Kelsey Cone
(Manchester, Vt.) netted a goal and four assists for the
Cadets, while junior Sophie Leclerc (Barre, Vt.)
added two goals and two helpers. Senior Amanda Gage (St.
Albans, Vt.) recorded a goal and an assist, and freshman
Cindy Fortin (Quebec City, Que.) finished with 26
saves to earn the win.
For Saint Michael's (2-5-1), freshman Kelly
Rose Losi (Milton, Mass.) scored off of assists
from sophomore Crystal Sarno (Stoneham, Mass.) and
freshman Emily Paquin (Bowie, Md.). Junior
Melanie Cullen (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton Academy)
saved 29 shots.
In the opener, sophomore Lauryn DePaul (Liverpool,
N.Y.) notched a hat trick, including two third-period
goals, and added an assist as sixth-ranked Elmira (10-2-0) scored
four times in the final period and rallied for the win. Senior
Tory MacNeil (Masset, Ont.) had a goal and two
assists for the winners, while sophomore Karen Colehour
(Schenectady, N.Y.) netted a goal and an assist. Junior
Kayla Coady (Charlottetown, PEI) and freshman
Amanda Ritzel (Spencerport, N.Y.) also scored a
goal apiece, while junior Allison Cubberley (Bracebridge,
Ont.) turned aside 16 shots.
For Colby (3-4-2), junior Becky Julian (South Windsor,
Conn.) tallied a hat trick and added an assist. Freshman
Stephanie Scarpato (Osterville, Mass.) added a
goal and two assists, while junior Lacey Brown (Freeport,
Maine) stopped 35 shots.
Landing on the All-Tournament Team were: Coady and DePaul for
Elmira; Julian and senior Lauren Goethals (Needham,
Mass.) for Colby; Fortin for Norwich, and Losi for Saint
Michael's.
