ALBANY, N.Y. - The Saint Michael's College women's soccer team
(5-9-2, 4-8-2 Northeast-10 Conference) pushed the top-ranked team
in the country, the College of Saint Rose, to the brink on Tuesday
before falling, 2-1.
The loss, Saint Michael's fourth straight one-goal defeat,
eliminates the Purple Knights from playoff contention.
Saint Rose (16-0-0, 13-0-0 NE-10) is the top-ranked team in the
National Soccer Coaches Association of America
(NSCAA)/HendrickCars.com Division II National Poll. The Golden
Knights, who improved to 10-0 at home this season, had not allowed
a goal in their previous three contests, and had played only three
games decided by one goal this season before Tuesday's challenge by
Saint Michael's.
Amanda Deck scored both Saint Rose goals,
giving the Golden Knights a 2-0 halftime edge. Two goalies combined
to make four saves for the Golden Knights.
For Saint Michael's, sophomore Megan Olsen
(Glenmont, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) scored in the 53rd
minute off of an assist from junior Kristin
Hagenbarth (Killington, Vt./Woodstock Union (UVM)).
Junior Ashleigh Adams
(Milton, Vt./Milton), in her first appearance of the
season, stopped six shots in defeat.
Saint Rose finished with a 23-5 advantage in shots, and a 13-1
edge in corner kicks.
Saint Michael's concludes its season on Sunday with a 1:30 p.m.
contest at the University of New Haven.
