SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. – The Saint Michael's College women's hockey team (0-1-0, 0-0-0 ECAC East) lost 2-0 in the 2010-2011 home opener against Buffalo State on Saturday at Cairns Arena. The Bengals (1-0-0, 0-0-0 ECAC West) used two second-period goals, including a power play goal, to put the Purple Knights away.
Freshman Courtney Orner (Peoria, Ariz./Peoria) scored her first career goal for the game-winner, assisted by sophomore Lauren Mallo (Maple Ridge, B.C./Thomas Haney). Mallo then chipped in an insurance power play goal with assists from senior Marissa McMullan (Haileybury, Ont./Chingaucousy) and junior Leah Knott (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson).
Scoring opportunities were slim for Saint Michael's, but seniors Meghan Colitti (Dover, N.H./Berwick Academy) and Kelly Rose Losi (Milton, Mass./Milton) led the team with four and three shots, respectively. The Bengals outshot the Purple Knights 25 to 15.
Senior goalie Alysia Goldman (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Hebron Academy) kept the Purple Knights in the game with 23 saves, including one-on-one breakaway saves on four consecutive Bengals possessions in the third period. Senior Alyssa Koniar (New Berlin, Wis./Univ. School of Milwaukee) made 15 saves for Buffalo State.
The Purple Knights return to action on Nov. 7 when they host New England College in their East Coast Athletic Conference opener at 7 p.m.
