SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. – The Saint Michael's College
women's hockey team (1-4-1, 1-3-1 ECAC East) suffered its
third one-goal loss of the season as UMass Boston (2-3-0, 2-3-0
ECAC East) took a 2-1 win at Cairns Arena on Friday.
The Beacons scored a mere 16 seconds after the puck dropped, as
senior Kristen Smith (Beavercreek, Ohio/The Culver
Academies) scored on a breakaway, assisted by sophomore
Alli Greenberg (Stoughton, Mass./Kents Hills
School). Freshman Brittany Dawber (Southbridge,
Mass./Proctor Academy) tallied the game-winner in the
seventh minute of the second period on assists from seniors
Katie Kirwan (Centerville, Mass./Barnstable)
and Hannah Davis (Oakdale, Minn./North Saint
Paul).
Saint Michael's junior Madelena Santore (Millington,
N.J./New Jersey Rockets/Rutgers Univ.) cut the defecit in
half early in the third period when she pounced on freshman
Macey Thomas's (Amherst, Mass./Northfield Mt. Herman
School) rebound and dumped it in the net. The Purple
Knights pulled sophomore goalie Erin Stevens (Watertown,
Conn./Conn. Polar Bears) with just over a minute
remaining, but the Beacons held on to win.
Stevens made 21 saves for Saint Michael's, while junior
Leah Hallett (Rocky Hill, Conn./Kingswood-Oxford)
stopped 19 shots for UMass Boston.
The Purple Knights return to action on Saturday when they host
Saint Anselm a 1 p.m.
