BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - The Saint Michael's College women's ice
hockey team (1-6-1) surrendered the game-winning goal with
just 9.9 seconds left in overtime in a 2-1 loss at NCAA
Division I Sacred Heart University on Friday night.
For Sacred Heart (2-10-0), Caitlin Gottwald
scored the overtime goal in the waning seconds, off of an assist
from Lauren Fontaine. Tara Kent
also scored for the Pioneers, while Alexius Schutt
stopped 26 shots.
Junior Madelena Santore (Millington, N.J./New Jersey
Rockets/Rutgers Univ.) netted her team-leading sixth goal
of the season for the Purple Knights, off of an assist from junior
Kiera Nelligan (Melrose, Mass./Arlington
Catholic). Sophomore Erin Stevens (Watertown,
Conn./Connecticut Polar Bears) recorded 39 saves in the
loss.
Both teams scored in the first period, with Saint Michael's goal
coming with just two seconds left in the frame. Neither team could
light the lamp for the remaining 40 minutes of regulation, and it
appeared that overtime would feature no scoring as well. However,
Gottwald's even-strength score, her second goal of the season,
helped the Pioneers snap a three-game losing skid and pick up their
first home win of the season. Saint Michael's, meanwhile, has lost
three straight, and five of the Purple Knights' six losses this
season have been by one goal.
Saint Michael's completes a two-game series with the
Pioneers on Saturday at 2 p.m.
