SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. – The Saint Michael's women's hockey team (2-9-1, 1-4-1 ECAC East) lost by a single goal for the fifth time this season, this time to Colby in the opening game of the sixth annual Saint Michael's Holiday Classic at Cairns Arena on Friday. The Purple Knights had an answer for every Mule goal, but Colby junior Marissa Simmons (Chestnut Hill, Mass./Milton Acad.) notched the game-winning power play goal midway through the second period to give the Mules revenge on the defending tournament champions.

For Saint Michael's, junior Maddy Santore (Millington, N.J./New Jersey Rockets) scored twice, including the first Purple Knights goal on a crafty breakaway move that found her slicing past the net on the right side for a last-second flush. Santore recorded her second goal off junior Kelly McDonald's (South Burlington, Vt./South Burlington) rebound on a 5-on-3 power play in the second period.

Saint Michael's freshman Macy Thomas (Amherst, Mass./Northfield Mt. Herman School) tied things at 3-3 with her first collegiate goal by pouncing on a rebound off a thunderous slap shot by sophomore Allison Graf (Long Lake, Minn./Minnesota Thoroughbreds).

Colby senior Stephanie Scarpato (Osterville, Mass./Barnstable) reclaimed the lead in the 12th minute of play, tallying her team-leading third goal of the season. Freshman Sylvia Xistris (Larchmont, N.Y./Loomis Chaffee School) split the defense in the kill zone and keenly dumped a no-look pass back to Scarpato, who fired the puck into the net. Scarpato would later assist on the game-winner, helping the Mules snap a four-game losing skid.

Colby freshman goalie Andrea Schweitzer (Andover, Mass./Rivers School) earned the win in her first collegiate appearance between the pipes, making 21 saves. For Saint Michael's, sophomore goalie Erin Stevens (Watertown, Conn./Conn. Polar Bears) made 38 saves before the Purple Knights favored an empty net in the final 44 seconds.

Colby returns to action tomorrow against Saint Catherine University at 7 p.m., while Saint Michael's concludes the women's share of the tournament with a 4 p.m. contest against the Wildcats on Sunday.
