BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - The Saint Michael's College women's ice
hockey team (2-6-1) snapped a three-game losing skid on Saturday
afternoon with a 4-2 win at NCAA Division I Sacred Heart
University.
The win came less than 24 hours after a 2-1 overtime loss to the
Pioneers on Friday evening.
Junior Kiera Nelligan (Melrose, Mass./Arlington
Catholic) led the Purple Knights with a goal and an
assist. Classmates Madelena Santore (Millington, N.J./New
Jersey Rockets/Rutgers Univ.), Kelly McDonald
(South Burlington, Vt./South Burlington) and Casey
Yelton (Arnold, Md./Washington Pride) also scored goals in
the win, while senior Alysia Goldman (Ballston Lake,
N.Y./Hebron Academy) stopped 39 shots to earn her first
victory of the season.
For Sacred Heart (2-11-0), Jamie Mey and
Megan Murphy netted goals, while Alexius
Schutt turned aside 22 shots.
Yelton opened the scoring for the Purple Knights just 3:12 into
the contest with an unassisted goal, but Murphy evened the score
for the Pioneers 8:20 later on the power play.
The score remained tied at 1-all until 5:03 into the second
period, as Saint Michael's again scored an even-strength unassisted
goal, this time by McDonald. Once again, Sacred Heart countered
later in the period, as Mey lit the lamp to even the score at 2-all
through 40 minutes of action.
Saint Michael's took the lead for good 3:06 into the third
period on Santore's team-leading seventh goal of the season, and
5:26 later, Nelligan's first score of the year gave the Purple
Knights some breathing room, and completed the scoring.
Saint Michael's returns to action on Friday with a 4 p.m. game
at Potsdam State University.
