BURLINGTON, Vt. - The Saint Michael'sCollege baseball team
(5-22-1) dropped a pair of games to Stonehill College on Wednesday
afternoon in games played at historic Centennial Field. The Purple
Knights were edged in the opener, 8-6, and blanked in the nightcap,
11-0.
Senior Tony Bonvechio (Newport, Vt./North Country Union) reached
base four times on the day for the Purple Knights, including a
2-for-3 effort at the plate in game one.
In the opener, Saint Michael's couldn't quite complete a
combeack from a six-run deficit, as the Purple Knights left the
tying run in scoring position to end the game. Bonvechio's two
doubles led Saint Michael's in game one, while classmates Jeff
McLaughlin (Rutland, Vt./Rutland) and Matt Beaulieu (Littleton,
Mass./Lawrence Academy) also singled twice and drove in a run.
Senior Mike Robert (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) suffered the loss,
allowing eight runs in 5.2 innings pitched.
In the nightcap, regionally-ranked Stonehill (18-15) scored in
all but the fourth inning to complete the sweep. The Skyhawks
rapped 15 base hits in game two, including a perfect 4-for-4
contest from James DeAlto. Saint Michael's, meanwhile, was held to
just six hits in the shutout loss, with sophomores Ben Mitchell
(Pembroke, Mass./Pembroke Academy) and Chad Estey (New Haven,
Vt./North Country Union) tallying two singles each. Senior Kevin
Wickles (Hatfield, Mass./Suffield Academy) took the loss,
surrendering six runs in 2.1 innings pitched.
Saint Michael's returns to action on Tuesday with a 3 p.m.
contest versus Norwich University on Doc Jacobs Field.
