COLCHESTER, Vt. –
The Saint Michael's College baseball team (6-22-1) used a
four-run third inning to earn a 7-4 victory versus Norwich
University on Thursday afternoon on Doc Jacobs Field.
For Saint
Michael's, freshman Rob McCarty (Canton,
Mass./Canton) pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his
third save of the season, tying the program record set by Charlie
Corbally in 1980, and equaled by Mike Thomas in 1999. The pitching
appearance was McCarty's 15th of the season, extending his
own program record.
Also for
the Purple Knights, classmate Collin Fishman (Bethesda,
Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) picked up his first
collegiate victory, allowing just two earned runs in 7.2 innings
pitched. He helped his own cause with two singles and two RBIs,
while senior Matt Beaulieu (Littleton, Mass./Lawrence
Academy) and sophomore Patrick Lawler (Franklin,
Mass./Franklin) also singled twice each. Senior
Tim Pilczak (Cohasset, Mass./Kents Hill School)
extended his program record with his 27th career double, driving in
two runs, as the Purple Knights took advantage of seven Norwich
walks and four Cadets' errors.
For
Norwich (7-23), sophomore David Maxfield (Randolph,
Vt.) singled twice and scored a run, while freshman
Dustin Shimkus (Collinsville, Ill.) added a
single, run scored, RBI and stolen base. Sophomore Seth
Knihtila (Westminster, Mass.), the first of four Norwich
pitchers, took the loss, allowing five runs (four earned) in three
innings.
After each
team traded a run in the first inning, Saint Michael's took
the lead for good with a four-run third inning off Knihtila.
Pilczak's two-run double was the big blow in the frame, as
the first four Purple Knights reached base and scored in the
inning.
Norwich made things
interesting in the eighth inning, as the Cadets scored twice on a
Sleeman single and a two-base fielding error, cutting their deficit
to 7-4 and chasing Fishman. Saint Michael's freshman
Matt Dunn (Needham, Mass./Needham) closed the
threat with a groundout to short, and McCarty faced just three
batters in the ninth, ending the contest with a double play, to
complete the victory.
Saint
Michael's returns to action on Saturday with a 1 p.m.
doubleheader at Saint Lawrence University. Norwich next plays on
Saturday, visiting Saint Joseph's College of Maine for a 1
p.m. twinbill.
