COLCHESTER, Vt. – The Saint Michael's College women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to #23 Merrimack on Tuesday at Duffy Field at the Doc Jacobs Complex. The Purple Knights (1-4-2, 0-3-2 NE-10) held the nationally-ranked Warriors (5-1-1, 5-0-0 NE-10) scoreless in a blustery first half where both squads battled for control of the ball. Merrimack struck early in the second frame, however, and stifled the Saint Michael's offense for the remainder of the contest.
Sophomore Jenn Pino (North Andover, Mass./North Andover) scored the game-winner for the Warriors, bouncing in header off a pass from senior Jessie DeGraan (Braintree, Mass./Braintree). Senior Jenn Senecal (Yarmouth, Maine/Yarmouth) had the best chance for the Purple Knights when she trapped a ball just inside the 18 yard line and blasted a shot inches over the crossbar with eight minutes to play.
Junior goalie Brittany Cocozza (Cranston, R.I./East Greenwich (Saint John's)) kept Saint Michael's in the game with five key saves, but was outdueled by Merrimack's junior keeper Kiley Horne (Scituate, Mass./Thayer), who made three stops in the shutout.
The Purple Knights return to action at Pace on Saturday for a 12 p.m. game.
