COLCHESTER, Vt. – The Saint Michael's College
women's soccer team used two goals within the first seven
minutes of play to post a 2-0 win over Saint Anselm at Duffy Field
on Wednesday. The Purple Knights (3-4-2, 2-3-2 NE-10) earned their
second Northeast-10 Conference win in the shutout.
Sophomore Megan Olsen (Glenmont, N.Y./Bethlehem
Central) attacked early, knocking in a header off a corner
kick by junior Kristin Hagenbarth (Killington,
Vt./Woodstock Union (Vermont)) just six minutes into the
contest. Freshman Jordyn Mallett (Winslow,
Maine/Winslow) netted her first collegiate goal less than
a minute later when she blasted a shot from a step inside the 18
yard line for the unassisted score.
The Purple Knights controlled the ball for the majority of the
contest, and junior goalie Brittany Cocozza (East
Greenwich, R.I./East Greenwich (Saint John's)) made
four saves. The Hawks nearly beat Cocozza twice, but the keeper
received some back up on two key Saint Anselm (2-5-1, 2-4-1
NE-10) scoring opportunities with defensive saves. Senior
Mary Diebold (Northfield, Vt./Northfield) stepped
into the net to block a shot shortly after Saint Michael's
took a 2-0 lead, and junior Mary Catanzarita (Syracuse,
N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) kicked away a ball
bouncing toward the net in the second half.
Senior goalie Jacqueline Cooney (Braintree,
Mass./Braintree) made five saves for the Hawks, who drop
to 0-5 on the road with the loss.
The Purple Knights return to action on Saturday when they host
Le Moyne at 1:30 p.m.
