RUTLAND, Vt. - The Saint Michael's women's ice hockey team (3-14-1, 2-8-1 ECAC East) snapped an eight-game losing streak and scored a season-high six goals in a win over Castleton at Spartan Arena on Friday. Sophomore goalie Erin Stevens (Watertown, Conn./Connecticut Polar Bears) stopped 42-of-43 shots faced to stifle the Spartans and six different Purple Knights lit the lamp in the team's first win since Dec. 4.
For Saint Michael's, senior Kelly Rose Losi (Milton, Mass./Milton) struck first as she redirected a pass from freshman Michelle Doherty (Chelmsford, Mass./East Coast Wizards) to give Saint Michael's an early power play goal. Later in the period, junior Kelly McDonald (South Burlington, Vt./South Burlington) won a faceoff in the Castleton zone and fed junior Kiera Nelligan (Mellrose, Mass./Arlington Catholic), who put Saint Michael's up 2-0.
McDonald and Nelligan switched roles in the second period, as McDonald deposited a slapshot off of Nelligan's team-leading sixth assist. Sophomore Allison Graf (Long Lake, Minn./Minnesota Thoroughbreds) then notched a power play wrister to extend the Saint Michael's lead to four goals.
Senior Emily Paquin (Bowie, Md./Washington Pride) gave the Purple Knights their biggest lead of the night with a power play tally in the 10th minute of the third period before Castleton junior Meagan Hulbert (Barre, Vt./Vermont Stars) broke the shutout bid in the 16th minute. Saint Michael's senior Kaleigh Ferrari (Millbrook, N.Y./The Millbrook School) then scored her first goal of the season with 15 seconds left to secure a 6-1 win.
Saint Michael's returns to action on Saturday at New England College at 1 p.m.
