Box Score MIDDLETOWN, R.I. - Freshman Kristen Spulecki (Orchard Park, N.Y./Buffalo Bison) played a hand in all three Saint Michael's College women's ice hockey goals on Friday, as the Purple Knights fell against Salve Regina University, 6-3, at Saint George's Ice Rink.
Saint Michael's slipped to 0-6-1 overall and in Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) East action, while the Seahawks are 3-3 and 3-3.
Spulecki notched two goals and an assist, while senior Kelly McDonald (South Burlington, Vt./South Burlington) had a marker and a helper. Junior Erin Stevens (Watertown, Conn./Connecticut Polar Bears) made 30 saves in 47:38, while sophomore Meaghan Leong (Cohasset, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) had three stops in her college debut.
Junior Melanie Sherlock (Colorado Springs, Colo./Rampart) totaled two goals and an assist for Salve Regina, while three players had a goal and an assist apiece. Classmate Ali Muehlbronner (Glenside, Pa./Abington) recorded 16 saves.
The Purple Knights held the Seahawks off the scoreboard until 9:33 had elapsed, as Stevens posted 18 first-period saves. At 14:34, Sherlock netted a power-play marker to give her team a 2-0 edge.
After the Seahawks netted a short-handed marker 9:45 into the next period, Spulecki scored off a McDonald feed with 13:42 left during a power play, getting the visitors on the board.
Salve Regina scored three times in the opening 3:59 of the third period, including twice on the power play 40 seconds apart, but McDonald converted a Spulecki pass at 4:33 to break the hosts' scoring run. At the 13:10 mark, Spulecki netted her second goal, taking a feed from senior Madelena Santore (Millington, N.J./New Jersey Rockets).
Saint Michael's heads to the College of the Holy Cross tomorrow for a 7 p.m. contest.
