BOSTON, Mass. - The Saint Michael's College women's ice hockey
team (4-16-2, 3-10-2 ECAC East) was edged at the University of
Massachusetts Boston, 2-1, in conference action on Friday.
Junior Kiera Nelligan (Melrose, Mass./Arlington
Catholic) extended her scoring streak to five games with a
first-period goal in the loss. Her goal was assisted by classmate
Kelly McDonald (South Burlington, Vt./South
Burlington) and sophomore Allison Graf (Long Lake,
Minn./Minnesota Thoroughbreds). Sophomore Erin
Stevens (Watertown, Conn./Connecticut Polar Bears) turned
aside 26-of-28 shots in the setback.
For UMass Boston (11-9-0, 8-7-0 ECAC East), Rachel
Sousa and Sarahanne Cavolo scored a goal
apiece, while Jami Cudmore recorded 12 of her 25
saves in the third period.
Nelligan gave the Purple Knights a 1-0 lead 7:39 into the
contest with her fifth goal of the season, but less than six
minutes later, Sousa netted her eighth goal of the year, evening
the score at 1-all.
The score remained tied until midway through the second period,
when Cavolo lit the lamp for her fourth goal of the season.
That proved to be the final goal of the game, as Saint Michael's
failed to capitalize on a pair of power play opportunities in the
final 30 minutes of the contest. The Purple Knights also pulled
Stevens for the final 29 seconds, but to no avail.
Saint Michael's returns to action on Saturday with a 1 p.m.
contest at league-rival Saint Anselm College.
