SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. – The Saint Michael's College women's hockey team (6-19-2) concluded the season with a commanding 9-2 win over Sacred Hearty University in their second game of the Eastern College Athletic Conference Open Tournament at Cairns Arena on Sunday. For Saint Michael's, junior Madelena Santore (Millington, N.J./New Jersey Rockets/Rutgers Univ.) scored three goals to become the program's all-time single-season goals leader, passing former Purple Knights Noreen Russo and Meg Lyons, who were tied with 17 goals.

Seven Purple Knights had multiple point games to secure the team's largest margin of victory of the season. Sophomore Chrissy Skrzat ( Lansdale , Pa. /Boston Shamrocks) matched Santore's game-high four points with a goal and three assists, while senior Emily Paquin (Bowie, Md./Washington Pride) and freshman Macey Thomas (Amherst, Mass./Northfield Mount Hermon School) each had two goals. Junior Kelly McDonald ( South Burlington , Vt. /South Burlington) tallied a goal and an assist, and senior Kelly Rose Losi ( Milton , Mass. /Milton) and sophomore Melissa Hallisey ( Dedham , Mass. / Dedham ) each had two helpers.

For Sacred Heart (8-21-0), senior Lauren Fontaine ( Windsor , Ontario /Catholic Central) netted both her team's goals with junior Nicole Palazzo ( Rocky Hill , Conn. / Westminster ) assisting on both.

The Purple Knights leaped out to a 4-0 lead in the first period despite the shots being deadlocked at 17 per side. Santore ignited the Saint Michael's attack with a breakaway goal after a long pass along the boards from sophomore Alison Graf ( Long Lake , Minn. / Minnesota Thoroughbreds) just 44 seconds into the game. McDonald followed shortly after with a one-timer off a perfect cross-ice pass from Santore on a 2-on-1 breakaway. Paquin then netted a power play goal by flushing her own rebound after her initial breakaway shot was saved, and freshman Thomas made it 4-0 when she sunk a mop-up goal after a flurry of Saint Michael's shots were deflected by Sacred Heart junior goalie Raelene Sydor (Saint Albert, Alberta/Saint Albert-Kal-Tire Slash).

The Pioneers gained two back by way of Fontaine's dual goals, but the Purple Knights added three more to blow the game open. Skrzat opened the period with a backhanded shovel shot from a tough angle on the goal line, making it 5-0 Saint Michael's. Fontaine then put Sacred Heart on the board when she broke free from the pack while drawing a penalty, and held on for the delayed penalty goal. Santore answered with back-to-back goals, the first coming on a sly wraparound goal as she held the puck on the right post just long enough to coax Sydor out of the crease.

Two minutes later, Santore struck again when she lunged for a rebound outside the crease, spun around and flicked a backhanded shot into the net to become the Saint Michael's all-time single-season scoring leader. Fontaine added a power play goal in the 16th minute to make it 7-2 in favor of the Purple Knights heading into the final period.

Saint Michael's picked up two more goals in the third period, starting with a well-placed one-timer by Paquin off a pass from freshman Michelle Doherty ( Chelmsford , Mass. /East Coast Wizards) from behind the net. Thomas finished things off with her second goal of the night by slapping in her own rebound after a breakaway.

Senior goalie Alysia Goldman ( Ballston Lake , N.Y./Hebron Academy) stopped 40 shots in her last game in net as a Purple Knights, and Sydor made 33 saves for Sacred Heart.

The Purple Knights finish the 2010-11 campaign with six wins, their best total since the 2008-09 season and tied for second most in 11 seasons of varsity play.
