LANTANA, Fla. – The Saint Michael's College baseball team (0-1) opened their 2011 season with a 2-1 loss to UMass Lowell despite flawless defense and an impressive outing on the mound by junior captain Austin Ziskie (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda Chevy Chase).

For the Purple Knights, Ziskie allowed two runs on seven hits with a walk and two strikeouts in eight innings of work. Sophomore Collin Fishman (Bethesda, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) paced the offense with two singles and a double, and sophomore Jacob Begnoche (Essex Jct., Vt./Essex (Univ. of Vermont)) picked up his first collegiate hit.

The River Hawks got on the board in the fourth inning when sophomore James Katsiroubas (Milton, Mass./Milton) hit a solo home run after what was originally ruled a ground rule double was changed after a conference between the umpires. Saint Michael's tied things up in the sixth after sophomore Tim McDonnell (Durham, N.H./Oyster River) worked a leadoff walk, chasing UMass Lowell sophomore pitcher Mike Sloban (Merrimack, Mass./Pentucket Regional) from the game. McDonnell stole second, advanced to third on a wild throw and scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman Nick Nelson (Spofford, N.H./Keene).

UMass Lowell would pick up the winning run on a sacrifice fly by junior Cam Kneeland (Rowley, Mass./Triton Regional) in the eighth inning. Ziskie finished the inning and was relieved by freshman Corey Livingston (Hartford, Conn./East Catholic) in the top of the ninth, who struck out a batter and coaxed a double play in his first collegiate appearance. Minus a single by Fishman, the Purple Knights went down in order in their final turn at bat.

The Purple Knights return to action tomorrow with games against Saint Thomas Aquinas and Nyack.
