FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Saint Michael's College
baseball team (3-3) endured a 13-4 loss at Nova Southeastern on
Wednesday. The Purple Knights couldn't recover from a
seven-run deficit after two innings and allowed 14 walks and 13
hits in the setback.
For Saint Michael's, freshman Alec Tice
(Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) suffered the loss on the
mound, allowing nine runs on nine hits in four innings. Tice helped
his own cause by going 2-for-4 at the plate with a double. Freshman
Tyler Wild (Quaker Hill, Conn./Saint Bernard
School) recorded the first multiple-hit game of his young
college career, and sophomore Collin Fishman (Bethesda,
Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) ripped an RBI double. Junior
pitchers Chris Hoey (Huntington, N.Y./Saint
Anthony's) and Matt Dunn (Needham,
Mass./Needham) each allowed two runs in relief.
For the Sharks, junior Scott Woodrey (Lighthouse Point,
Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) had three hits, including a grand slam.
Classmate Alan Avila (Pembroke Pines, Fla./Archbishop McCarthy)
also homered and drove in three runs, while senior James Martinez
(Hollywood, Fla./Broward College) earned the win with two innings
of scoreless relief.
Woodrey's grand slam put Nova Southeastern up early and
pressured Saint Michael's with a 7-0 disadvantage after two
innings. The Purple Knights would muster all their runs in the top
of the third, beginning with a leadoff single by Wild. Freshmen
Nick Nelson (Spofford, N.H./Keene) and
Chris Puliafico (Sharon,
Mass./Sharon) each knocked RBI base hits, and Fishman
brought home two more with a double to right field, but the
Sharks' bullpen quieted the Saint Michael's offense the
rest of the game. Nova Southeastern plated runs in all but two
innings to improve to 15-7 on the year.
The Purple Knights play their second game outside of the Palm
Beach Challenge tomorrow when they travel to Fort Pierce, Fla., for
a game against Mercy at 2 p.m.
