LANTANA, Fla. – The Saint Michael's College baseball
team (4-7) felt the payback after Friday's toppling of Palm Beach
Atlantic University with a 14-0 loss to the Sailfish, before
falling to Merrimack College, 8-2, in the team's final day of
action in Florida on Saturday.
In game one, the Sailfish banged out 14 hits and piled on five
runs apiece in the third and sixth innings to put the Purple
Knights down double digits. Sophomore T.J. Harbuck (Ormond
Beach, Fla./State College of Florida) tossed five innings
of three-hit, shutout ball and struck out nine for the win.
Freshman Jimmy Kelly (Delton, Fla./Seabreeze) and
junior Aaron Ilharreguy (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Citrus
College) combined for four innings of scoreless relief
with Ilharreguy throwing two hitless frames. Sophomore
Taylor Kaprive (Wellington, Fla./Wake Forest
University) was one of six for Palm Beach (17-9) with
multiple hits, including a double and a home run.
For Saint Michael's, freshman pitcher Nick Myers
(Canton, Conn./The Master's School) suffered the
loss, allowing five runs on six hits in three innings. A double by
junior Chad Estey (New Haven, Vt./Mount
Abraham Union) was the bright spot for the Purple Knights,
who left 12 runners on base.
In game two, Merrimack (6-3) scored two runs in the eighth
inning to erase a 2-1 deficit, then sealed the win with a five-run
ninth inning. P.J. Farnham singled three times and
drove in two runs for Merrimack, while Tim Curran
doubled, singled and recorded two RBIs. Mike
Laracy pitched seven effective innings to earn the
victory.
Junior Ben Mitchell (Pembroke, N.H./Pembroke
Academy) and freshman Jacob Begnoche (Essex,
Vt./Essex) each singled twice for Saint Michael's.
Sophomore Collin Fishman (Bethesda, Md./Bethesda Chevy
Chase) pitched well in a no-decision, allowing just one
earned run and five hits in six innings, with two walks and three
strikeouts.
Errors marred the eighth inning for Saint Michael's. After
giving up a leadoff single, freshman Corey Livingston
(Hartford, Conn./East Catholic) solicited a potential
6-4-3 double play ball, but a throwing error after the force out
put a runner on second with one out. A second throwing error plated
the tying run, and a successful suicide squeeze gave Merrimack a
3-2 lead. Sophomore Rob McCarty (Canton,
Mass./Canton) came on in relief and promptly picked off a
runner at second for the second out, loaded the bases with a single
and walk, and worked out of the jam with a groundout to
shortstop.
Merrimack extended its lead in the ninth when the Saint
Michael's bullpen crumbled under the weight of fatigue. The
Warriors picked up five runs off McCarty and classmate
Chris Hoey (Huntington, N.Y./Saint Anthony's) in
the frame.
The Purple Knights return to action on April 3 with a
doubleheader at the University of New Haven.
