EASTON, Mass. - The Saint Michael's College baseball team (5-21)
suffered a pair of narrow losses at regionally-ranked Stonehill
College on Monday, falling in game one, 1-0, and the nightcap,
6-3.
In the opener, Stonehill (27-12), ranked sixth in today's East
regional rankings, scored the game's lone run with two outs in the
bottom of the seventh inning. Steve Popp led off
the inning with a single, and following a two-out walk, came around
to score on a single up the middle from Nick
Nardacci. Alex McCormick struck out eight
and allowed just six hits and one walk in eight innings to earn the
win, while Brenden Shepard struck out the side in
a perfect ninth inning to earn his 10th save of the
season.
Sophomore Collin Fishman (Bethesda, Md./Our Lady of Good
Counsel) took the hard-luck loss in the opener for Saint
Michael's, allowing just one run while striking out eight in 7.1
innings pitched. He scattered eight hits and four walks in falling
to 1-3 on the season. Senior Pete Estes (Bennington,
Vt./Mount Anthony Union) singled twice and stole his
team-leading seventh base in the loss, while junior
Tim McDonnell (Durham, N.H./Oyster River)
doubled.
In game two, Stonehill snapped a 1-all tie with a two-run fifth
inning as the Skyhawks won the seven-inning nightcap to complete
the sweep. Rich McHugh homered, singled, drove in
three runs and scored a pair to lead the hosts, while James
DeAlto singled twice and scored a run. Michael
White tripled, scored a run and tallied an RBI in the win,
while Michael Von stein pitched 1.1 innings of
hitless relief to improve to 5-0 on the season.
For Saint Michael's, Estes went 3-for-4 at the plate with a run
scored, while McDonnell had an RBI double in the seventh inning,
pulling the Purple Knights to within 6-2. Junior Chad Estey
(New Haven, Vt./Mount Abraham Union) followed with an RBI
single, pulling the Purple Knights to within 6-3, but the rally
ended there. Junior Ben Mitchell (Pembroke, N.H./Pembroke
Academy) also had an RBI single for the Purple Knights,
while sophomore Andrew Duprat (Fairfax, Vt./Bellows Free
Academy-Fairfax) allowed three runs in 4.1 innings pitched
in suffering the loss.
Saint Michael's is back in action on Wednesday with a 2 p.m.
doubleheader at Middlebury College.
