WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The Saint Michael's College baseball team (4-9) suffered a pair of losses at regionally-ranked University of New Haven on Sunday afternoon, falling in game one, 4-1, and in game two, 11-7.

New Haven (15-8) is ranked seventh in this week's National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division II East Regional Poll, while Saint Michael's was playing its first games since its 11-game Spring Break trip in Florida from March 13-19. The Chargers have now won five of their last six games, while Saint Michael's has lost four straight.

In the opener, New Haven scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to snap a scoreless duel and earn the win. Andrew Johnson's two-run single was the big hit in the inning for the Chargers, while Jack Heary doubled and scored in the sixth inning to complete the scoring for the hosts in game one. Alex Smith allowed just one run on three hits in eight innings of work to earn his first victory of the season, while Mitch Rossi threw a perfect ninth inning for his seventh save of the year.

For the Purple Knights, junior Austin Ziskie (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda Chevy Chase) pitched well in defeat, allowing four runs on six hits in seven innings, with two walks and three strikeouts. Junior Tim McDonnell (Durham, N.H./Oyster River) tripled and scored the lone Saint Michael's run in the eighth inning, while freshmen Alec Tice (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) and Tyler Wild (Quaker Hill, Conn./St. Bernard School) singled for the other Saint Michael's hits.

In the nightcap, New Haven scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to take the lead for good and shake off a pesky Purple Knights' squad. Brendon Buckley led the Chargers in game two with a home run and single, scored twice, drove in two runs, and stole three of the 12 bases that New Haven swiped in the nightcap. Ryan Brockett also homered and stole three bases, while scoring three runs, while Heary singled twice, tallied three RBIs, and recorded three steals. Henry Hirsch, the fourth of five New Haven pitchers in game two, earned the win while allowing the tying unearned run in 1.2 innings of work.

Wild had a strong game for Saint Michael's in the nightcap with two singles, three RBIs, a run scored and a stolen base. Junior Chad Estey (New Haven, Vt./Mount Abraham Union) reached base four times with two singles and two walks, and added two RBIs, while senior Pete Estes (Bennington, Vt./Mount Anthony Union) and freshman Nick Nelson (Spofford, N.H./Keene) each singled, stole a base, and scored twice. Freshman Nick Myers (Canton, Conn./The Master's School) took the loss, allowing four runs in 2.2 innings of relief, after the Purple Knights had rallied from a five-run deficit to even the score at 6-all in the sixth inning.

Saint Michael's returns to action on Tuesday with a 3:30 p.m. contest at in-state rival Middlebury College.
