COLCHESTER, Vt. – The Saint Michael's College baseball team (4-11) opened its home schedule on Friday with a pair of losses to Southern New Hampshire University on Doc Jacobs Field. In game one, Southern New Hampshire (12-13) pulled away from the Purple Knights, 6-0, and in game two, the visiting Penmen completed the sweep with a 7-1 victory.

In the opener, freshman Junior Mendez (Patchogue, N.Y.) allowed just one hit in the first 6.1 innings, and finished with a three-hit shutout, to lead the Penmen. Mendez didn't walk anyone, and struck out 10, in the 100-pitch effort. Offensively, SNHU broke open a close game with a four-run seventh inning, with a two-run double from senior Robert Wronsi (Arlington, Mass.) the big blow in the frame.

Overall, Wronski finished 2-for-3 in the opener with two runs scored and two runs batted in, while junior Kevin Spatkowski (Bristol, Conn.) also went 2-for-3 with a double and single, driving in three runs. Graduate student Chris O'Neil (Chelmsford, Mass.) tripled, scored a run and added an RBI in the win.

For Saint Michael's in game one, junior Chad Estey (New Haven, Vt./Mount Abraham Union) and freshmen Chris Puliafico (Sharon, Mass./Sharon) and Alec Tice (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) each singled, with Estey and Puliafico's hits coming in the seventh and final inning. Sophomore Collin Fishman (Bethesda, Md./Bethesda Chevy Chase) suffered the loss on the mound, despite allowing just one run and three hits in five innings of work.

In the nightcap, freshman Tyler Gauthier (Lynn, Mass.) fired a two-hitter for his first win of the season as the Penmen completed the sweep. The visitors scored twice in the fourth inning to take a 3-0 lead, and broke the game open with a three-run seventh inning.

Leading the SNHU offense in game two was sophomore Matt Boulter (Wrentham, Mass.), as he tripled, singled and scored twice. Freshman Albert Stanton (Sandwich, Mass.) added two singles, two RBIs and a run scored, while sophomore Jon Massad (Shrewsbury, Mass.) doubled and drove in a pair.

For Saint Michael's, freshman Nick Myers (Canton, Conn.Canton) suffered the loss, allowing three earned runs in 5.1 innings pitched, while striking out six. Classmate Tyler Wild (Quaker Hill, Conn./Saint Bernard School) singled and scored on a groundout from Estey in the fourth inning, while Tice also singled in the nightcap.

Saint Michael's returns to action on Tuesday, as the Purple Knights visit the University of Massachusetts Lowell for a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader. Southern N.H. is back in action on Saturday, hosting Northeast-10 Conference the University of New Haven for a noon doubleheader.
