Box Score

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. - Senior Erin Stevens (Watertown, Conn./Connecticut Polar Bears) broke the Saint Michael's College women's ice hockey program's career record for saves on Friday evening while limiting a high-scoring Salve Regina University squad during a 2-0 loss at the Saint George's School ice rink during Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) East action. The Purple Knights slipped to 1-6 overall and in the league, while the Seahawks are 6-4 and 4-3. Salve Regina entered the game second in the league in scoring (3.67), and eighth in Division III.

Stevens posted 46 stops for her 12th career 40-save contest, in the process surpassing Alysia Goldman '11 (1,823) atop the school's career saves list. Stevens completed the evening with 1,851 stops and is closing in on becoming the 23rd goalie in Division II/III history with 2,000 saves.

Senior Samantha Zitzer (River Forest, Ill./Chicago Young Americans) and first-year Kelsey Lynch (Collegeville, Pa./National Sports Academy) each scored for Salve Regina, while senior Ali Muehlbronner (Glenside, Pa./Princeton Tigerlilies) made 20 saves.

The Purple Knights took three of the game's first four shots on goal before later firing off one go-ahead attempt during an early power play, but Salve Regina took a 1-0 lead into the locker room following the first period. With 15 seconds remaining on a power play, Zitzer found the back of the net at 13:36 of the opening stanza.

After making 14 stops over the initial 20 minutes, Stevens recorded 20 more in the second period, including making her program-record 1,824th save a little after the five-minute mark during an early Seahawk power play. Saint Michael's looked to knot the contest late in the period, but sophomore Kristen Spulecki (Orchard Park, N.Y./Buffalo Bison) had a shot turned away, and Lynch countered by scoring with 1:26 remaining to make it 2-0.

Senior Melissa Coughlin (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) fired off a shot that was knocked away in the final 10 seconds of the stanza during a power play that carried over into the third period, where the visitors had one more extra-woman shot on net turned aside. Saint Michael's was outshot only 12-7 in the scoreless final frame.

The Purple Knights complete a two-game weekend road trip at the College of the Holy Cross tomorrow at 7:30 p.m.
