POTSDAM, N.Y. - The Saint Michael's College women's ice hockey team fell to the State University of New York at Potsdam, 3-1, on Saturday at Clarkson University's Cheel Arena in the teams' second meeting in as many days. After the loss, the Purple Knights drop to 1-8-1 after the non-conference contest, while the Bears improve to 3-8-1.
Sophomore Maire Bartkus (Acton, Mass./Northfield Mount Hermon) netted her first goal of the season for Saint Michael's, while senior Erin Stevens (Watertown, Conn./Connecticut Polar Bears) stopped at least 40 shots for the seventh time this season, notching 42 saves to raise her career total to 1,974.
Sophomore Alexandra Holowka (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Balmoral Hall) tallied a goal and an assist for SUNY Potsdam, while junior Jenn Crawford (Burlington, Ontario/Stony Creek Sabres) and sophomore Izzy Fayerman (Calgary, Alberta/The Edge) also scored. Junior Dawna Salvarinas (Mississauga, Ontario/Brampton Thunder) registered 16 saves.
Bartkus scored the game's first goal, finding the back of net 45 seconds into the opening period. Crawford knotted the contest at 1-1 with 4:26 remaining in the frame. Stevens turned away 18 shots in the period while only allowing one goal, as the teams went to the locker room tied 1-1. The game stood even until Fayerman connected for a marker 10:32 into the second period. Holowka made the score 3-1 by tallying a goal 2:56 into the third period.
Saint Michael's returns to the ice on Jan. 4, when it faces Sacred Heart University at 7 p.m. to begin play in the eighth annual DoubleTree Ice Hockey Classic at Cairns Arena.
