COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College women's soccer team topped regionally-ranked and unbeaten Bentley University, 1-0, for its first win of the season in a Northeast-10 Conference game on Tuesday at Duffy Field. With the victory, the Purple Knights improve to 1-4-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the league, while Bentley, which holds the No. 10 ranking in this week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) East Region poll, drops to 3-1-2 and 1-1-2.
Sophomore Meagan Brady (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley/Vermont) netted her first collegiate goal for the Purple Knights, while first-year Kaylee Sullivan (East Greenwich, R.I./East Greenwich) made one save to notch her first victory and shutout of the season. Saint Michael's held advantages of 12-5 in shots and 4-1 in corner kicks.
Sophomore Christiana Hynds (West Roxbury, Mass./Boston Latin School) dropped her first decision of the season, stopping seven shots for Bentley.
The hosts took 11 of the game's first 13 shots, breaking a scoreless tie early in the second half. Senior Cassie Crockett (Gilmanton, N.H./Gilford) headed a ball between two Falcon defenders in the 56th minute, sending Brady in alone on Hynds before the strike slipped a shot into the right side of the net at 55:23. The Purple Knights immediately threatened to extend their lead, firing three shots in the next four minutes, but were unable to beat Hynds for a second time, including when Crockett was turned away in the 57th minute when Hynds stopped the ball with her left foot.
Bentley fired off three shots between the 62nd and 67th minutes while looking for the equalizer, with just one reaching the net. Sullivan denied that long 67th-minute shot, which rolled into the box, and that stood as the final shot yielded by the Purple Knight defense.
Saint Michael's returns to action on Saturday when it hosts NE-10 opponent regionally-ranked Adelphi University at 1 p.m. The Panthers are sixth in this week's NSCAA East Region poll.
