NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College women's ice hockey team fell to No. 5 Norwich University, 10-0, in Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) East action on Wednesday night at Kreitzberg Arena. After the defeat, the Purple Knights slip to 1-11-1 overall and 1-8 in the league, while the Cadets, who are nationally ranked in the most recent D3hockey.com poll, improve to 7-2-3 and 7-1.
Senior goaltender Erin Stevens (Watertown, Conn./Connecticut Polar Bears) stopped at least 40 shots for the eighth time this season, as she made 41 saves for Saint Michael's.
Senior Jillayne DeBus (Howell, Mich./Elmira) tallied two goals and two assists for a Norwich team that reached last season's NCAA Tournament title game after winning the 2011 NCAA championship. Sophomore Tyne Gove (Berwick, Ontario/Ontario Hockey Academy) finished with a goal and two assists, junior Renee Lortie (Cornwall, Ontario/Ontario Hockey Academy) had a goal and an assist, while sophomore Kaycie Anderson (Maple Plain, Minn./Minnesota Crunch U-19AA) notched three assists. Sophomore Loren Carrier (Chandler, Ariz./Ohio State) made two saves for Norwich.
First-year Maggie Cross (Wattsburg, Pa./National Sports Academy) had two. Senior Stephanie Invernizzi (Hingham, Mass./Hingham), juniors Meghan Papagno (Wakefield, Mass./Wakefield), Kayla Parsons (Fairbanks, Alaska/North American Hockey Academy) and Brittany Sharman (Ayer's Cliff, Quebec/Stanstead College), and first-years Paige Foster (Slave Lake, Alberta/Warner Hockey School) and Lucie Manhartova (Prague, Czech Republic/Czech Republic National Team) also tallied.
Junior Meghan Papagno (Wakefield, Mass./Wakefield) gave the Cadets a 1-0 advantage 7:51 into the first period before the hosts went on top, 3-0, by 17:56. DeBus scored twice in the second frame, with her second at 19:01 making it 6-0. The Cadets scored twice in a 3:22 stretch early in the third period before tacking on two more in the closing 8:49.
The Purple Knights finish up a home-and-home with Norwich on Friday at 4 p.m. at Cairns Arena.
