HENNIKER, N.H. - The Saint Michael's College women's ice hockey team lost to New England College, 3-0, on Friday afternoon in an Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) East contest at Lee Clement Arena. The Purple Knights fall to 0-6 overall and 0-5 in conference play while the Pilgrims improve to1-5 and 1-2.
First-year Tina Frasca (Norwood, Mass./Massachusetts Spitfires) turned away a career-high 33 shots, including posting a season best for a period with 19 in the second period. Her team outshot the hosts 39-33, including 17-8 in the first period and 13-8 in the third. Pilgrim senior Kristin Dehm (Milford, Conn./Connecticut Polar Bears), sophomore Morgan Braniff (Tustin, Calif./Anaheim Lady Ducks) and first-year Demi Latham (Redwood City, Calif./Anaheim Lady Ducks) all scored, while junior Lauren Hopps (Green Bay, Wis./Madison Capitals) had 39 saves and an assist.
The Pilgrims took advantage of a power-play opportunity in the first period, as Dehm lit the lamp at 15:37 to give her team the lead. Saint Michael's had a power-play chance of its own 13 seconds later and took five shots on net that were all turned away by Hopps before going on a brief two-woman advantage for two seconds at 17:48. The Purple and Gold took one more shot on goal during the second power play but were unable to find the back of the net.
Latham added to her team's lead 3:54 into the second, with junior Marisa Roth (Burlington, Mass./Williston Northampton) and sophomore Lindsey Stewart (South Windsor, Conn./Canterbury School) assisting. The Purple Knights were given their third power-play opportunity of the night 4:46 into the second period, but both shots on goal during the power play were stopped by Hopps.
The Pilgrims added a late goal to pad their lead, as Braniff scored on the power play at 15:06 in the third frame. Saint Michael's had one more power-play opportunity at 16:29 of the final frame, but shots on net by first-years Athena Akiki (Allendale, N.J./New Jersey Rockets) and Sarah Bagley (Concord, Mass./Concord-Carlisle) were denied by Hopps. The Purple Knights pulled Frasca with 2:20 remaining in the game, but their three shots on goal in that final stretch were saved.
The Purple Knights travel to face Castleton State College tomorrow at 1 p.m.
