RUTLAND, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College women's ice hockey team fell to Castleton State College, 7-1, on Saturday afternoon in Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) East action at Spartan Arena. The Purple Knights fall to 0-7 overall and 0-6 in league play while the Spartans improve to 4-4 and 2-2.
Purple Knight senior Olivia Collins (South Boston, Mass./Boston Latin School) scored her team's only goal while classmate Macey Thomas (Amherst, Mass./Northfield Mount Hermon) and first-year Kayla Kee (Newton, Mass./Newton South) each had assists. Classmate Abby Burke (Bedford, Mass./Assabet Valley Patriots) stopped 29 shots.
Spartan first-year Lisa Kilroy (Leominster, Mass./Lady Flames) had two goals and two assists. Sophomore Samantha Pion (Easthampton, Mass./Proctor Academy) scored two goals while classmates Anna Daniels (Falun, Sweden/Leksands IF) and Nicoline Jensen (Hellerup, Denmark/Malmo Redhawks) each had a goal and two assists. Sophomore Rachel Bombardier (Pittsford, Vt./Saint Paul's School) also scored. Junior Paula Stephens (Seattle, Wash./Okanagan Hockey Academy) turned away 13 shots.
Pion gave the Spartans a lead 1:29 into the first period. She scored the eventual game-winner 8:21 into the second period. The Spartans scored four straight goals in the third period, with the first one coming 31 seconds into the frame by Bombardier. Kilroy, Daniels and Jensen scored at 3:08, 10:05 and 12:46, respectively, before Collins broke up the shutout on the power play at 14:51. Kilroy ended the scoring at 17:07 of the third.
The Purple Knights are next in action on Dec. 6 when they host the State University of New York at Potsdam at 4 p.m.
