SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College women's ice hockey team twice grabbed a one-goal lead on the State University of New York at Potsdam on Saturday before falling 6-2 during non-league play at Cairns Arena. The Purple Knights are 0-9 and completed their first-semester slate, while the Bears are 6-4-2.
First-year Erin Dwyer (Weymouth, Mass./Charles River) scored the first two goals of her career for Saint Michael's, while classmate Sarah Bagley (Concord, Mass./Concord-Carlisle) had a pair of assists. First-year Abby Burke (Bedford, Mass./Assabet Valley Patriots) made 24 stops.
Senior Amanda Lucky (Kanata, Ontario/Clarkson) had two goals and an assist for SUNY Potsdam, and first-year Jordan Ott (Hilton, N.Y./Rochester Edge) also scored twice. Senior Jessica Silveira (Brampton, Ontario/Brampton Thunder) posted a goal and three assists, and junior Izzy Fayerman (Calgary, Alberta/The Edge) tallied. Senior Brittany Lucky (Kanata, Ontario/Ottawa Senators) and sophomore Sally Mooney (New Albany, Ohio/Wyoming Seminary) both recorded a pair of helpers, and sophomore Alexane Rodrigue (Monkland, Ontario/Bemidji State) posted 21 saves.
The Purple Knights got on the board first with 7:48 gone in the opening period. After a SUNY Potsdam giveaway near its own blue line, the puck trickled deep past the right circle, where first-year Carolyn Avery (Lexington, Mass./Lexington) caught up and fired a bad-angle shot. Rodrigue made the stop, but the rebound came out to the left post, where Dwyer tucked away her first college goal. The Bears nearly knotted the contest just shy of the 14:30 mark, with three straight close-range shots being denied by Burke, including the final shot near the left post being covered despite the visitors having a partial open net.
Ott connected on her first goal 2:34 into the second period, one-timing home Silveira's cross-ice pass, before Dwyer scored again 10:55 into the frame. During a two-on-one rush, Bagley dished from the blue line through the defender's skates to Dwyer, who moved in close and tipped her shot home. Ott equalized the contest 2:47 later, tipping in Brittany Lucky's power-play slapper. Burke kept the game tied during the late stages, stopping Silveira's odd-woman shot with a little more than a minute to go.
The Bears tallied four times in the third period, ultimately scoring the game's final five markers. Amanda Lucky tipped in first-year Kaylen Van Wagner's (Red Hook, N.Y./Hotchkiss Prep) blast from the left point for the game-winner after 53 seconds, and Fayerman knocked in a loose puck at 5:24. The Purple Knights nearly drew within 4-3 just a minute later, as the puck trickled untouched through the SUNY Potsdam crease before a visiting skater cleared it off the line. Silveira scored at 9:40, and Amanda Lucky added a short-handed empty-net marker with 1:15 remaining.
Saint Michael's next plays on Jan. 3-4 when it hosts the four-team DoubleTree Ice Hockey Classic, beginning with a 7 p.m. meeting with Sacred Heart University on the opening day.
