SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College women's ice hockey team suffered its third straight one-goal loss on Friday, dropping a 3-2 decision to Franklin Pierce University in a non-conference match-up at Cairns Arena. With the loss, Saint Michael's drops to 1-19-1, while the Ravens improve to 6-12.
Senior Madelena Santore (Millington, N.J./New Jersey Rockets) and junior Macey Thomas (Amherst, Mass./Northfield Mount Hermon) each tallied their fourth goals of the season for Saint Michael's, while senior Erin Stevens (Watertown, Conn./Connecticut Polar Bears) made 46 stops for her 11th 40-save game of the year.
First-years Colleen Doucette (Wakefield, Mass./Wakefield) and Michaela Faia (Malden, Mass./Kents Hill) each finished with a goal and an assist for Franklin Pierce, and classmate Michelle Stock (Austin, Texas/Alliance Bulldogs) also scored. First-year Haylea Barbieri (Plainville, Mass./Boston Shamrocks) provided a pair of assists, and junior Amelea Gray (Bozeman, Mont./Hamline) made 14 saves.
Following a scoreless first period, Thomas stole the puck in the offensive zone and scored on the ensuing breakaway 1:21 into the second frame to give the Purple Knights the lead. Doucette evened the score when she buried a rebound on a power play 5:30 into the period. Faia scored during a power play with 8:02 left in the frame before Santore converted a one-timer off of a pass from behind the net from sophomore Kristen Spulecki (Orchard Park, N.Y./Buffalo Bison) to make the score 2-2 3:19 later. Stock's game-winner put the visitors in front 3-2 with 3:06 remaining in the game.
The Purple Knights host Franklin Pierce again tomorrow at 1 p.m.
