Women's tennis downs NE-10 power and regionally-ranked Adelphi, 7-2

ORLANDO, Fla. - The Saint Michael's College women's tennis team stayed perfect in 2012-13 by downing regionally-ranked Adelphi University, 7-2, during a Northeast-10 Conference match on Monday at the RDV Sportsplex. The Purple Knights handed the Panthers just their second NE-10 loss in the last 20 matches.

The Purple and Gold is now 4-0 overall and 4-0 in the league after knocking off a 2011-12 NE-10 regular-season tri-champion and a 2012 NCAA Tournament qualifier. The Panthers, who are 3-4 and 2-1, were ranked eighth in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Region poll.

Saint Michael's jumped out to a 3-0 lead by winning all three doubles matches. In the top position, seniors Emily Magee (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) and Jean-Marie McGrath (Niwot, Colo./Alexander Dawson School) combined for an 8-5 victory over the 10th-ranked tandem in the region, senior Maria Toft (Copenhagen, Denmark/Oesterborgerdyd Gymnasium) and sophomore Bianca Posa (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream).

Senior Alex Dalton (South Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames) and sophomore Caroline Martin (Scituate, Mass./Scituate) registered an 8-4 win in the second spot, while sophomore Caroline Toutoungi (Weston, Conn./Weston) and first-year Erica Bundrick (Mattituck, N.Y./Mattituck) held on for a 9-8 win at No. 3, taking the tie-breaker by a 7-5 count.

Four Purple Knights then won their singles matches, with three needing three sets. Dalton's 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 3 was the largest for Saint Michael's, while Bundrick earned a 6-2, 4-6, 6-0 victory in the second spot. Sophomore Hannah Benoit (Mystic, Conn./Saint Bernard School) triumphed at No. 4, 6-1, 4-6, 7-5, and Toutoungi rallied for a 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 10-7 win at six. McGrath suffered a narrow 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 loss at No. 5, and Magee absorbed a setback in the first position to Toft, who is ranked sixth in the region.

Saint Michael's is back in action tomorrow when it faces Saint Cloud (Minn.) State University at 9:30 a.m.
