PLYMOUTH, N.H. - First-year Erin Dwyer (Weymouth, Mass./Charles River) scored with 2:04 left in regulation for the Saint Michael's College women's ice hockey team on Saturday, as the Purple Knights tied Plymouth State University, 1-1, during Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) East play in Hanaway Rink. The Purple Knights, who are in the midst of a six-game road swing, moved to 1-11-2 overall and 0-7-1 in the league. The Panthers snapped a four-game losing streak and are now 3-11-1 and 1-6-1.
Saint Michael's received 30 saves from first-year Tina Frasca (Norwood, Mass./Massachusetts Spitfires), who extended her streak of 30-save outings to five contests. Junior Kristen Spulecki (Orchard Park, N.Y./Buffalo Bison) and first-year Kayla Kee (Newton, Mass./Newton South) each notched assists, as the Purple Knights were narrowly outshot 31-29.
First-year Justine Gelinas (Lac Drolet, Quebec/Stanstead College) scored for the Panthers, and senior Ali Ponte (Richmond Hill, Ontario/Stouffville Jr. Stars) made 28 stops.
Plymouth State fired off the first four shots of the game, as well as nine of the opening 11, with Frasca making 11 of her saves in the opening stanza. Six of the final eight shots in the period came off of Saint Michael's sticks, with the Panthers killing a late penalty that extended into the second period.
The hosts negated two more penalties in the second before the Purple Knights held Plymouth State off the board during its own woman advantage, with Frasca stopping all six shots sent her way during the two minutes. Less than a minute after Saint Michael's had another power play killed off, Gelinas potted the go-ahead goal at 7:38. The visitors were given another woman advantage less than a minute after that but could not convert, including as senior Tracy Stevenson (Wayne, Maine/Kents Hill School) had consecutive shots stopped late in the power play.
With 2:12 remaining in regulation, the Purple Knights gained another woman advantage, this time cashing in after just eight seconds when Dwyer scored for the second straight day. Kee and Spulecki assisted the marker, which came 17:56 into the period. After Frasca denied two more shots, the squads went to overtime, where she made four more stops. Junior Fernanda Saavedra (Miami, Fla./Pittsburgh Penguins Elite) fired both Saint Michael's shots in the extra session, including being stopped by Ponte with less than 20 seconds remaining.
The Purple Knights head to Franklin Pierce University on Tuesday for a 7:30 p.m. game.
