MANCHESTER, N.H. - The Saint Michael's College women's ice hockey team opened a two-game Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) East road weekend with a 7-0 loss at Saint Anselm College in Sullivan Arena on Friday. The Purple Knights slipped to 1-13-2 overall and 0-8-1 in the league, while the Hawks, who entered the game tied for fourth in Division II/III in scoring offense (4.12), are 15-2 and 8-1.
First-year Abby Burke (Bedford, Mass./Assabet Valley Patriots) made 17 stops in the opening 33:44 for the visitors before senior Meaghan Leong (Cohasset, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) had 13 saves in relief. Classmate Macey Thomas (Amherst, Mass./Northfield Mount Hermon) and junior Kristen Spulecki (Orchard Park, N.Y./Buffalo Bison) each won five face-offs.
Sophomore Alex Kazmer (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake Central) scored twice for the Hawks while juniors Sabrina Iannetti (Lynn, Mass./Saint Mary's) and Franny Nicholson (Saint Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) and first-year Meaghan Spurling (Byfield, Mass./Brewster Academy) each notched one goal and two assists. Junior Tiffany Herron (Clinton Township, Mich./Chippewa Valley) and first-year Alison Butler (Danvers, Mass./Saint Mary's) both turned in a goal and a helper, and first-year Hannah Synnott (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) had 14 saves.
Burke made seven saves in the first 3:43 alone to keep Saint Anselm off the board before the hosts scored twice in a 1:21 stretch, with Butler putting her team on the board at 5:06 and Kazmer adding to the lead at 6:27. Iannetti made it 3-0 with 2:53 remaining in the opening stanza. The Hawks received a power-play goal from Spurling at 4:55 of the second frame before the Purple Knights had 1:45 of a two-woman advantage, but Saint Michael's was unable to put a shot on goal, and Nicholson potted a woman-up marker at 13:44. Herron and Kazmer posted power-play tallies 56 seconds apart during the final 4:48 of the contest.
The Purple Knights are at the University of Massachusetts at Boston tomorrow at 1 p.m.
