WINCHENDON, Mass. - The Saint Michael's College women's ice hockey team suffered a 3-1 loss at Franklin Pierce University on Tuesday during non-league play at Jason Ritchie Ice Arena. The Purple Knights are now 1-10-1 overall, while the Ravens improved to 10-2.
Junior forward Fernanda Saavedra (Miami, Fla./Pittsburgh Penguins Elite) tallied her first goal of the year, as the converted defenseman now has four points in her last two games. First-year blue liner Athena Akiki (Allendale, N.J./New Jersey Rockets) earned an assist for her first college point. Senior Macey Thomas (Amherst, Mass./Northfield Mount Hermon) won eight face-offs, classmate Mary Liz Pinnella (Manasquan, N.J./New Jersey Lady Patriots) controlled four draws, and first-year Tina Frasca (Norwood, Mass./Massachusetts Spitfires) made 31 saves for her fourth consecutive 30-save outing.
Sophomores Karsyn Baker (Detroit, Mich./Belle Tire) and Colleen Doucette (Wakefield, Mass./Wakefield) each notched a goal and an assist for the Ravens, and first-year Marisa Ketterman (Palmer, Alaska/Gilmour Academy) also tallied. Sophomore Michaela Faia (Malden, Mass./Kents Hill) dished out two assists, and first-year Shannon O'Neil (Tewksbury, Mass./Middlesex Islanders) had 19 stops.
Frasca stopped the first 13 shots the Ravens sent on net during the opening period, including all four during a late power play, before Baker broke the deadlock with 15 seconds remaining. Doucette and Faia both assisted.
The teams played through a scoreless second period, with each squad killing a penalty. Akiki and Pinnella both had a shot denied during the Purple Knights' woman advantage, which expired in the final minute, and Frasca stopped Doucette in the waning seconds to send the teams into the second intermission separated by one goal.
Less than a minute after Thomas' tying chance was turned away by O'Neil, Doucette doubled her team's lead at 4:37, grabbing a rebound during a scramble in the goal mouth. Ketterman redirected a pass from the slot for a power-play goal just 2:43 later. Saavedra broke Franklin Pierce's shutout bid at 16:55, deking a pair of defenders and roofing a shot from the left circle. Akiki assisted the tally. The Purple Knights were unable to come any closer, being held without a shot from there despite pulling Frasca with 1:14 remaining.
