Women's ice hockey bested in final minute during 2-1 loss at Saint Anselm

Box Score

MANCHESTER, N.H. - The Saint Michael's College women's ice hockey team surrendered the go-ahead goal with 5.6 seconds remaining in regulation in a 2-1 loss to Saint Anselm College at Sullivan Arena on Saturday. The Purple Knights slip to 0-3 overall and 0-2 in Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) East play, while the Hawks move to 4-0 and 2-0. Saint Anselm has won the past three ECAC Open Tournaments.

Junior Amanda Kempainen (Chazy, N.Y./Chazy Flyers U19) scored for Saint Michael's with assists from senior Fernanda Saavedra (Miami, Fla./Pittsburgh Penguins Elite) and junior Emily Loebs (Acton, Mass./Minuteman Lady Flames). Sophomore goalie Tina Frasca (Norwood, Mass./Tabor Academy) made a career-high 47 saves in the loss.

Senior Tiffany Herron (Clinton Township, Mich./Belle Tire) netted the go-ahead goal and assisted on another for Saint Anselm, while classmate Franny Nicholson (Saint Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) scored. Junior Alex Kazmer (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake Central) and sophomore Meaghan Spurling (Byfield, Mass./Brewster Academy) both had an assist, while senior Lindsey Brown (Mounds View, Minn./Ohio State) collected nine saves.

After going on the power play with 1:04 to go in the third period, Saint Anselm buried its second player-advantage goal of the game. Following Spurling's shot being stopped by Frasca, the rebound popped out to the slot where Herron then picked up the loose puck and fired a shot to the top left corner of the net.

The Hawks opened the first period by outshooting the Purple Knights, 15-2, with nine of Saint Anselm's shots coming in the first 10:35. Following a Saint Michael's penalty, the hosts peppered Frasca with three shots before potting the game's first goal at 10:47 when Nicholson tallied. The Purple and Gold finished the period with two scoring bids that were turned away by Brown, including one in the final minute.

Saint Anselm once again owned the majority of the scoring chances, as the team held a 14-5 shot advantage in the second stanza. Saint Michael's, though, drew even on the scoreboard when Kempainen buried her team-leading second goal of the season at 6:15. The Purple Knights registered three additional shots on goal in the period, but Brown stopped them all.

Despite being outshot 20-3 in the third period, Saint Michael's kept the score at a 1-1 tie until the final minute thanks in part to 19 saves by Frasca and seven blocked shots from Purple Knight skaters.

The Purple Knights continue their ECAC East schedule with a pair of road games next weekend, beginning with the University of Southern Maine at 4 p.m. next Friday.
