Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Saint Michael's College women's ice hockey team broke from league play to take on Connecticut College for the first time in program history on Tuesday, suffering a 4-2 setback at Dayton Arena. The Purple Knights are now 2-17-3, while the Camels improved to 9-10-3.
In her college debut, first-year Erica Ragazzo (Mansfield, Mass./Ursuline Academy) made 33 saves for the visitors, while junior Fernanda Saavedra (Miami, Fla./Pittsburgh Penguins Elite) had a goal and an assist. Senior Macey Thomas (Amherst, Mass./Northfield Mount Hermon) potted her career-high sixth goal.
First-year Ashley Anctil (Manchester, N.H./Team Pitt) scored twice for Connecticut College, while junior Julia Rodricks (Baltimore, Md./Manhattanville) and first-year Stephanie Izzi (West Cornwall, Conn./Connecticut Polar Bears) also found the back of the net. Classmate Samantha Kemper (Oyster Bay, N.Y./Choate Rosemary Hall) made 24 stops.
Izzi got the Camels on the board 2:46 into the contest after a scramble out front, but Thomas found the equalizer at 13:13 by picking up the rebound of a teammate's shot. Saavedra and sophomore Amanda Kempainen (Chazy, N.Y./Chazy Flyers U19) assisted. Ragazzo had 13 of her saves during her first period of work, and made 11 more in the second, blanking the Camels until more than half of the stanza had elapsed.
Twenty-nine seconds into a power play, Anctil netted her first goal of the day at 12:47, and Rodricks made it 3-1 at 16:47, just seven seconds after Saint Michael's killed a penalty. Saavedra cut the deficit to 3-2 with her second goal of the year 13:37 into the third period, but Anctil netted an insurance goal at 16:37.
The Purple Knights complete their Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) East schedule with a pair of home games this weekend, first against Castleton State College on Friday at 4 p.m.
