Box Score SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. - The Hamilton College women's ice hockey team won both of its games during the weekend en route to winning the 10th annual DoubleTree Ice Hockey Classic at Cairns Arena on Saturday. The Continentals beat Plymouth State University, 5-3, in Saturday's opening game, while Saint Michael's College fell to the State University of New York at Oswego, 3-1, in the second game.
Senior Fernanda Saavedra (Miami, Fla./Pittsburgh Penguins Elite) tallied the lone Saint Michael's goal and was named to the all-tournament team for the 2-10 Purple Knights. Classmate Maire Bartkus (Acton, Mass./Northfield Mount Hermon) and sophomore Erin Dwyer (Weymouth, Mass./Charles River) assisted on the marker. Sophomore goalie Tina Frasca (Norwood, Mass./Tabor Academy) made 30 saves in the loss. Frasca now has 16 30-save performances in just 21 career appearances.
SUNY Oswego, which improves to 9-2, received two goals from junior Lizzy Marks (Penfield, N.Y./Rochester Edge) and one marker from sophomore Ashley Lyman (Lockport, N.Y./Buffalo Bisons). Senior Bridget Smith (Hamburg, N.Y./Mississauga Chiefs Int. AA) and sophomore Kendall Appelbaum (Eden, N.Y./Buffalo Bisons) both earned one assist. Junior Tori Trovato (Fulton, N.Y./Troy-Albany Ice Cats) collected 19 saves for the win. Marks and sophomore Alli Ullrich (Saint Louis, Mo./Saint Louis Lady Blues) were both named to the all-tournament team.
Both teams skated to a scoreless first period despite SUNY Oswego holding a 15-2 shot advantage. The Lakers had four scoring chances during a power-play opportunity at 9:30 of the opening period, but Frasca kept the visitors off the board with trio of glove saves and one kick save. In the second stanza, Dwyer raced up the ice on a breakaway, but her backhanded shot was stuffed by Trovato's right leg pad with 2:50 to play in the period. The Purple Knights then jumped to the 1-0 lead when Bartkus fed a breakout pass into the neutral zone to Saavedra, who then skated into the offensive zone and snapped a shot from the left circle past Trovato's glove at 9:06.
SUNY Oswego took over in the final period, scoring three goals on nine shots. Marks evened up the score when her shot from the right circle was stopped by Frasca's blocker, but the puck popped over her right shoulder and trickled over the goal line at 14:26. Lyman then gave the Lakers a 2-1 lead just 19 seconds later when she picked up the loose puck off a Saint Michael's defender and punched in the score to the right side of the net. The Purple and Gold pulled Frasca for the extra attacker with 49 seconds remaining, but sophomore Kayla Kee (Newton, Mass./Newton South) accounted for the only shot for the hosts before Marks notched an empty-net tally from outside the blue line with 28 seconds left to play.
In the day's opening game, first-year Steph DiPietro (Quincy, Mass./Bay State Breakers) scored twice, including netting the winner, for 4-4-2 Hamilton, while junior Hannah Bartlett (Marshfield, Mass./Massachusetts Spitfires) and sophomore Katie Parkman (Stratford, Prince Edward Island/Brewster Academy) both had one goal and one assist. Sophomore Teal Gosselin (Franklin, Mass./Saint Mark's School) also scored. Senior Sarah Schuchardt (Verona, Wis./Phillips Academy) made four third-period stops to nab the win after first-year Sam Walther (Gambrills, Md./The Gunnery) had 15 saves in the first 40 minutes. Parkman and sophomore Megan Ahern (Oswego, N.Y./Millbrook School) were both named to the all-tournament team, with Parkman also earning most valuable player honors.
Senior Kate Banys (Newburyport, Mass./Saint Thomas Aquinas) netted a pair of tallies for 1-12-1 Plymouth State, while junior Olivia Leon (Natick, Mass./The Winchendon School) also found the back of the net and was named to the all-tournament team. First-year Mariah Trupp (Topeka, Kan./National Sports Academy) made 35 saves.
With 3:10 to go in the opening period, DiPietro slid a back-handed shot from the slot that snuck past a screened Trupp to give the Continentals a 1-0 edge heading into the intermission. The teams combined for five second-period goals, with Plymouth State scoring the first two in a matter of 1:47. Junior Marisa Zamrock's (Lewiston, Maine/Kents Hill School) pass from the left goal line extended into the slot found Banys, whose one-timer hit the upper right corner at 1:28. During a power play, Leon put the Panthers in front after finding a rebound at the right post at 3:15.
Hamilton twice found tying markers in the final 8:59. Gosselin redirected a teammate's pass from the hash marks into the lower left side to knot the contest at 11:01, but Banys picked the upper left corner from above the right circle 2:49. At 18:23, the Continentals again tied the game, this time as Parkman sent a shot from the slot that was blocked into a Plymouth State skater, but as the Panther spun away, the puck was sent into the net. Hamilton completed the comeback in the third period, as DiPietro one-timed home Ahern's pass just inside the left post 7:12 into play. At 13:55, Bartlett netted a power-play marker, picking the upper right corner from high in the left circle.
The Purple Knights are back in action on Friday at Franklin Pierce University for an 8 p.m. contest.
