Box Score SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. - The Hamilton College and State University of New York at Oswego women's ice hockey teams both earned victories on Friday during the opening day of the 10th annual DoubleTree Ice Hockey Classic at Cairns Arena. SUNY Oswego topped Plymouth State University, 2-0, in the opening contest, while Hamilton picked up a 5-1 win against Saint Michael's College in the nightcap. The winner of the tournament will be determined tomorrow, as Hamilton opposes Plymouth State at 1 p.m. and the Purple Knights take on SUNY Oswego at 4 p.m.
First-year Sierra Hannough (Hudson, Quebec/Taft School) scored the lone goal for the 2-9 Purple Knights with assists from junior Kaly Spilhaus (Bourne, Mass./Groton School) and sophomore Kayla Kee (Newton, Mass./Newton South). Sophomore starting goalie Abby Burke (Bedford, Mass./The Rivers School) made 25 saves in 49:28 before being relieved by classmate Tina Frasca (Norwood, Mass./Tabor Academy), who faced no shots in the final 10:32 of play.
Hamilton moved to 3-4-2 thanks to two goals and one assist by sophomore Katie Parkman (Stratford, Prince Edward Island/Brewster Academy) and a 17-save performance by senior Sarah Schuchardt (Verona, Wis./Phillips Academy). Sophomore Teal Gosselin (Franklin, Mass./Saint Mark's School) had one goal and one assist, while junior Casey Brown (Lafayette, Colo./Massachusetts Spitfires) and sophomore Megan Ahern (Oswego, N.Y./Millbrook School) both netted a marker. Senior Courtney Power (Oakville, Ontario/Appleby College), junior Naomi Woolfenden (Mill Creek, Wash./Gilmour Academy), sophomore Sara Taffe (Maple Grove, Minn./Benilde-Saint Margaret's School) and first-years Jade Alvillar (Cloquet, Minn./Esko Lincoln) and Caroline Knop (Lake Bluff, Ill./Chicago Youth Americans) each had one assist.
In the first-ever meeting between the two teams, Hamilton potted two special teams goals in the first period for a 2-0 lead. Gosselin put the Continentals up first when she picked up the loose puck off a rebound and buried a power-play goal at 6:22. Parkman then extended the margin after she stole the puck from a Saint Michael's defender low in the Purple Knights' defensive zone and buried a backhanded shot past Burke's left pad at 14:30 for the shorthanded tally. Brown's goal at 5:30 of the second period made the score 3-0 before Hannough broke up the shutout at 11:04 when she corralled the loose puck in traffic and punched in the score for her first career goal.
Hamilton totaled two more goals in the final stanza after Ahern scored at 8:29, followed up by Parkman's second score of the game just 59 seconds later. Saint Michael's sophomore Erin Dwyer (Weymouth, Mass./Charles River) gave the final offensive burst for the Purple and Gold when her breakaway shot attempt was turned away by Schuchardt's blocker with 40 seconds left in the game.
SUNY Oswego improved to 8-2 behind a 13-save shutout from senior Bridget Smith (Hamburg, N.Y./Mississauga Chiefs Int AA). First-year Andrea Noss (Orange, Conn./Connecticut Polar Bears) recorded a goal and an assist, classmate Rachel Lenard (Orchard Park, N.Y./Buffalo Bisons) also scored, and first-year Olivia Ellis (Wilcox, Saskatchewan/Notre Hounds) dished off two assists. First-year Mariah Trupp (Topeka, Kan./National Sports Academy) made 28 stops for 1-11-1 Plymouth State.
SUNY Oswego held a 10-3 edge in shots during a scoreless opening period before Lenard broke the deadlock 5:05 into the second. After taking Ellis' feed, Lenard went 5-hole on a shot from below the right face-off dot. During a SUNY Oswego power play midway through the stanza, Plymouth State sophomore Haley Branovan (Wexford, Pa./Culver Academy) skated in 1-on-2 and made a quick move in front before being denied by Smith.
Just 1:36 after Plymouth State killed off its third penalty in a 7:59 stretch, Noss tacked on to her team's lead. Ellis' shot from the point hit sophomore Alyssa Brockmann (Fairport, N.Y./SUNY Potsdam) out front, and the puck popped out to the right post, where Noss found an empty net at 12:54. Facing a power play, the Panthers pulled Trupp and skated 6-on-4 for the final 1:23, but Smith stopped a pair of shots to clinch the shutout.
