Box Score WORCESTER, Mass. - Assumption College junior Julianna Molloy (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) scored with 2:37 remaining in the second overtime period on Monday as the Greyhounds downed the Saint Michael's College women's lacrosse team, 14-13, at the Assumption Multi-Sport Stadium. The Purple Knights slipped to 0-2 overall and 0-2 in the Northeast-10 Conference, falling against a squad that was receiving votes toward the national poll as recently as last week. The Greyhounds improved to 5-1 and 1-1 in the teams' third straight one-goal game.
Senior Courtney Piper (Wolfeboro, N.H./Brewster Academy) notched her fifth career four-goal game for the visitors, coming within one tally of her career high, while classmate Kate Boyer (Standish, Maine/Bonny Eagle) turned in two goals and one assist. Senior Melissa Jaskiewicz (Kensington, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) scored twice while totaling a career-high seven draw controls and three ground balls, sophomore Paige MacKinnon (Lowell, Mass./Lowell) tallied a pair of goals and snagged three ground balls, while senior Kim Liberty (Jericho, Vt./Mount Mansfield Union/Saint Lawrence) also scored twice.
Junior Steph Bonewald (New London, N.H./Proctor Academy) posted one goal, one assist, four draw controls and two caused turnovers, while first-year Kealy Moyna (Yonkers, N.Y./The Ursuline School) dished off two assists and picked up four ground balls. Sophomore Grace Gunning (Norwell, Mass./Norwell) matched her career high with 12 saves, including three in overtime.
Senior Amy McNeil (Orange, Conn./Amity) had three goals and three assists for Assumption, classmate Camille Auger (Kennebunk, Maine/Kennebunk) scored four times, and junior Molly Brown (Manchester, N.H./Manchester Central) netted a hat trick. Molloy scored twice, and sophomore Jaclyn Chirco (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) stopped 10 shots.
The Purple Knights led 3-0 1:38 into the contest thanks to a marker after 16 ticks by Jaskiewicz and consecutive tallies by Liberty 1:03 apart. Assumption netted three of the next four before Boyer and MacKinnon scored 4:02 apart, allowing the visitors to lead 6-3 with 12:23 left in the opening half, but Auger scored twice in a 5-1 run that bridged halftime, and the Greyhounds took their first lead, 8-7, at 18:36 of the second stanza.
Midway through the period, MacKinnon knotted the game before Bonewald won the ensuing draw and came down to score just 10 seconds after her teammate's tally, putting Saint Michael's back in front with 14:30 to go. Auger's tying goal was met by a pair of Piper markers 2:46 apart, and the visitors held an 11-9 edge at 6:17. However, McNeil scored 33 seconds later, and Brown tied the game on a free-position try with 1:27 left. Liberty's winning attempt just before the final buzzer hit the side of the net.
McNeil added a go-ahead free-position goal 1:53 into the full-length six-minute first overtime period, but Boyer won the draw and tallied 10 seconds later. McNeil fed first-year Meghan Cushing (Gorham, Maine/Gorham) for another go-ahead tally with 1:43 left, but Bonewald won the draw and assisted Piper's tying goal at 1:31. Another shot by Piper with 11 seconds left was denied, and the teams advanced to a sudden-death period. Toward the middle of that second overtime, near the end of the first three-minute segment before the teams switched ends after three minutes, Gunning stopped a free-position shot with 11 seconds to go and denied another shot just before the horn. However, the Greyhounds won the ensuing draw, and Molloy scored 23 seconds later.
The Purple Knights head to Roberts Wesleyan (N.Y.) College tomorrow for their third game in four days. Opening draw is set for 4 p.m.
