Box Score ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Saint Michael's College women's lacrosse team capped a three-game stretch in four days with an 11-10 loss at Roberts Wesleyan (N.Y.) College on Tuesday at the RWC Lacrosse Field. Now 0-3, the Purple Knights suffered their second one-goal setback in as many days. The Redhawks are 4-3.
Senior Courtney Piper (Wolfeboro, N.H./Brewster Academy) notched her second four-goal game in a row for Saint Michael's, adding three ground balls, while classmate Kate Boyer (Standish, Maine/Bonny Eagle) had two goals and one assist. Junior Steph Bonewald (New London, N.H./Proctor Academy) recorded two goals, five draw controls, four ground balls and two caused turnovers, while senior Kim Liberty (Jericho, Vt./Mount Mansfield Union/Saint Lawrence) and first-year Kealy Moyna (Yonkers, N.Y./The Ursuline School) tallied.
Senior Melissa Jaskiewicz (Kensington, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) turned in five draw controls and three ground balls, and sophomore Paige MacKinnon (Lowell, Mass./Lowell) contributed three draw controls, helping the Purple Knights hold a 17-6 advantage in the category. Classmate Grace Gunning (Norwell, Mass./Norwell) made seven saves while adding four ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Junior Loren Dunn (East Rochester, N.Y./East Rochester) led Roberts Wesleyan with four goals and an assist, and classmate Ali Fox (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua Academy) and sophomore Cassley Jackowski (Lafayette, N.Y./Lafayette) both notched a hat trick. Classmate Shannon Knapp (Lafayette, N.Y./Lafayette) made eight saves.
Liberty's tally from a Boyer pass 1:49 into the game was met by Dunn scoring at 25:01 of the opening half, but the Purple Knights scored three times in an ensuing 1:39 span to nab a 4-1 lead. Boyer scored once before Piper tallied a pair in that time. However, the Redhawks responded with a 5-0 run of their own, with Jackowski kicking off the stretch with two goals in 1:33. Fox knotted the game at 14:34, and Dunn scored the next two, giving Roberts Wesleyan a 6-4 lead with 5:19 remaining.
Piper ended her team's 21:15 scoring drought by finding the back of the net at 1:24, sparking a 4-0 run that bridged halftime and took 2:52 to elapse. Moyna knotted the game 36 seconds before the intermission, and Bonewald and Piper both scored within the opening 1:28 of the second half to give Saint Michael's an 8-6 edge.
The hosts countered with another run, using three straight goals to go ahead 9-8 when Jackowski scored with 19:51 left in regulation. Boyer's tying tally at 9:58 was countered with Fox's go-ahead free-position strike 1:18 later. Bonewald tied the game at 10 on an eight-meter goal with 4:23 left, but Fox again put her team in front, connecting on a free-position attempt at 3:04. Saint Michael's possessed with two minutes left until giving the ball away and forcing a final Redhawk turnover, but the Purple Knights turned it over once more in the dying seconds.
Saint Michael's opens its home slate against No. 1 Adelphi University on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Panthers, the defending national champions, are ranked in the latest Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) national poll.
