Box Score COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College women's lacrosse team trailed No. 1 Adelphi University by just three goals in the final minute of the first half before the Panthers tallied the last nine goals of the game in a 15-3 victory on Saturday at Duffy Field. In their home opener, the Purple Knights slipped to 0-4 overall and 0-3 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while Adelphi, the defending national champion, moved to 7-0 and 4-0. The Panthers, who claimed four of the past seven national titles, have not lost since the 2013 NCAA Tournament semifinals.
Sophomore Paige MacKinnon (Lowell, Mass./Lowell) recorded one goal and one assist for Saint Michael's while picking up three draw controls. Senior Melissa Jaskiewicz (Kensington, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) scored and nabbed four ground balls, while classmate Courtney Piper (Wolfeboro, N.H./Brewster Academy) also found the back of the net. Sophomore Grace Gunning (Norwell, Mass./Norwell) made a career-high 15 saves, and junior Casey Curtin (Waltham, Mass./Ursuline Academy) had one stop in 5:02 of relief. Classmate Emily Loebs (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxboro Regional) collected four ground balls and two caused turnovers, and senior Sarah Fortin (Dover, N.H./Saint Thomas Aquinas) also turned in four ground balls.
Sophomore Jacqueline Jahelka (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) had a game-high four goals for Adelphi, whose ranking is according to the latest Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) national poll. Senior Danielle Jaycox (Amityville, N.Y./Saint John the Baptist) added a hat trick and four assists, while junior Emily Keesling (Bel Air, Md./Patterson Mill) notched three goals and two helpers. Senior Alexa Froccaro (Sands Point, N.Y./Port Washington) recorded a hat trick, and junior Taylor Hayes (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Kellenberg) had three saves.
MacKinnon gave Saint Michael's an early lead, taking first-year Kealy Moyna's (Yonkers, N.Y./The Ursuline School) feed to tally 1:09 into the contest, before Jahekla knotted the contest at 24:58 of the opening period. During the ensuing 10 minutes, only the Panthers were able to fire off any shots, taking four, with Gunning stopping two and another ringing the post. Froccaro and Keesling broke the deadlock with two goals 2:25 apart, giving the visitors a 3-1 edge at 12:30, but Piper cut the deficit to one at 7:12.
After only five goals were scored in the opening 26:07, the teams matched that in the last 3:53 of the half, with Adelphi netting four of those goals. Jahelka tallied to kick off a run of three straight Panther tallies in a matter of 2:21, but MacKinnon found Jaskiewicz to bring the Purple Knights within 6-3 at 42 seconds. However, Jaycox got the goal right back for her team 19 seconds later, and the visitors led by four at the half.
Keesling and Froccaro scored 2:01 apart early in the second stanza, and Adelphi began the frame with six goals in a 10:56 stretch to pull away for good.
The Purple Knights, who play five of their first six games on the road, head to Merrimack College on Wednesday for a 4 p.m. contest.
