Box Score GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - The eighth-seeded Saint Michael's College women's lacrosse team suffered a 16-4 setback to top-seeded Adelphi University during Wednesday's Northeast-10 Conference Championship quarterfinal contest at Motamed Field. The Purple Knights, playing their first NE-10 Championship game since 2008, end their season at 6-9, while the Panthers, the defending NCAA Tournament champion, move to 16-1. Adelphi is also ranked second in the most recent Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) national poll, and advances to Saturday's semifinals.
Junior Steph Bonewald (New London, N.H./Proctor Academy) paced Saint Michael's with two goals, two ground balls and two caused turnovers. Seniors Kate Boyer (Standish, Maine/Bonny Eagle) and Courtney Piper (Wolfeboro, N.H./Brewster Academy) both scored, with Boyer adding two ground balls. Senior Taylor Midgley (Hampton, N.H./Saint Thomas Aquinas), junior Annie Henderson (Hancock, N.H./Northfield Mount Hermon/Saint Lawrence) and sophomore Paige MacKinnon (Lowell, Mass./Lowell) each scooped up two ground balls, while senior Melissa Jaskiewicz (Kensington, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) had two draw controls. Sophomore Grace Gunning (Norwell, Mass./Norwell) made 11 saves while collecting four ground balls.
Piper finished her career with 126 points, just one shy of the program's all-time top 10, while Boyer notched 97. Boyer (89) and Piper (84) are also 12th and tied for 14th, respectively, in school history in goals, and Piper tied for fifth in assists (42). Jaskiewicz is second in draw controls (133), while Midgley is third in caused turnovers (74) and tied for third in ground balls (132).
Senior Alex Froccaro (Port Washington, N.Y./Port Washington) provided five goals, one assist and two caused turnovers for Adelphi, while classmate Danielle Jaycox (Amityville, N.Y./Saint John the Baptist) registered three goals. Sophomore Jacqueline Jahelka (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) scored twice and had two assists, with juniors Rachel Aitkens (Whitehouse Station, N.J./Hunterdon Central Regional) and Emily Keesling (Bel Air, Md./Patterson Mill) both netting two goals. Senior Felicia Mills (Islip, N.Y./Islip) had 11 draw controls and junior Taylor Hayes (Rockville Center, N.Y./Kellenberg) stopped two shots in the opening 47:58 for the win.
Saint Michael's notched the game's first goal 3:40 into play when Boyer converted on a free-position attempt. Jaycox and Aitkens responded 44 seconds apart to give the Panthers a 2-1 lead before Bonewald evened up the score on the Purple Knights' second free-position goal of the game at 21:34 of the opening half. Adelphi then reeled off six consecutive goals from six different scorers in the closing 17:46 of the first half, including a player-down goal by Froccaro midway through the sequence, as the hosts enjoyed an 8-2 advantage at the break.
Adelphi kept its pace into the second stanza by pumping in eight straight goals to start the final half and build a 16-2 lead, including Keesling's marker just 13 seconds into the period and a Froccaro tally 19 seconds later. During the Panthers' scoring spree, Froccaro recorded four goals, while Jahelka scored once and assisted on two others. Saint Michael's closed out the game with two final goals thanks to Bonewald and Piper, who both notched a free-position goal in the closing 1:15.
The Purple and Gold won its last three regular-season games to clinch the eighth and final NE-10 postseason spot to finish with a 6-7 league record. The six league victories are the Purple Knights' most since 2008, when they made their most recent trip to the tournament.
