Box Score COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College women's lacrosse team received goals from five players as part of a 10-8 win against Franklin Pierce University during Northeast-10 Conference play at Duffy Field on Friday. The Purple Knights, winners in three of their last four games, improve to 3-5 overall and 3-4 in the league, while the Ravens slip to 5-4 and 3-4.
Seniors Kate Boyer (Standish, Maine/Bonny Eagle) and Courtney Piper (Wolfeboro, N.H./Brewster Academy) both registered three goals for Saint Michael's. Junior Steph Bonewald (New London, N.H./Proctor Academy) added two goals and six ground balls, and sophomore Paige MacKinnon (Lowell, Mass./Lowell) and first-year Kealy Moyna (Yonkers, N.Y./The Ursuline School) both notching one goal and one assist, with MacKinnon providing four draw controls.
Senior Melissa Jaskiewicz (Kensington, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) recorded three draw controls and two ground balls, while senior Taylor Midgley (Hampton, N.H./Saint Thomas Aquinas) and first-year Susie Ellicks (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxboro Regional) both caused two turnovers. Sophomore Grace Gunning (Norwell, Mass./Norwell) stopped a career-high 16 shots and collected six ground balls.
First-year Briana Sweeney (Shirley, N.Y./Longwood) paced Franklin Pierce with four goals, four draw controls and three ground balls, while junior Nicole Dale (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North) scored twice and had three ground balls. First-year Caitlin Sweeney (Shirley, N.Y./Longwood) scooped up six ground balls and sophomore Denise Hunt (Hull, Mass./Hull) had six saves.
The Purple Knights scored three of the game's first four goals by 12:20 of the opening half, with Piper accounting for two and MacKinnon burying one marker on a free-position attempt. Briana Sweeney scored with 8:40 remaining in the half to trim the deficit to 3-2, but Bonewald pushed the hosts up by two with a goal just 30 seconds later. Moyna and Boyer both scored as Saint Michael's closed out the half with a 6-2 lead, with Boyer's tally coming with 1:40 left.
Boyer netted another goal 2:51 into the second half to give the Purple and Gold a 7-2 advantage. The Ravens then received goals from four players as they rattled off five of the next six tallies in a 6:40 span en route to cutting a 7-2 deficit to 8-7 with 14:11 to go on a Dale marker. Saint Michael's ended the charge after Boyer and Piper both scored 2:41 apart to extend the Purple Knights' lead to 10-7 with 5:28 to play. Briana Sweeney notched Franklin Pierce's final goal with 3:49 remaining, but that proved to be the final shot of the game for either team.
The Purple Knights play next at No. 20 Bentley University on Wednesday at 6 p.m. Bentley's ranking is according to the latest Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) national poll.
