Spencer Nets OT Winner, Saint Michael's Tops Regionally-Ranked Southern Connecticut

COLCHESTER, Vt. - Junior Holly Spencer (Windham, Maine/Windham) scored 2:17 into overtime to give the Saint Michael's College women's soccer team the 2-1 win over regionally-ranked Southern Connecticut State University in a Northeast-10 Conference game on Saturday. The Purple Knights were celebrating their seniors during the game on Duffy Field. The Owls were ranked fifth in this week's United Soccer Coaches East Region poll.

  • The Purple Knights defeated the Owls for the first time since October 6, 2007, also an overtime victory on Duffy Field.
  • This was the Purple and Gold's third game in a row versus an opponent that was either nationally or regionally ranked.

  • Saint Michael's went to overtime for the third time in five games.
  • The Purple Knights celebrated their five seniors prior to the game: McNamara, Morse, Meghan Dieterle (Franklin, Mass./Franklin), Sarah Donnelly (Busan, South Korea/Mount Vernon) and Greta Ricigliano (Milwaukee, Wis./Nicolet).

THE ACTION

  • In the third minute of the game, McNamara passed the ball to Spencer, who quickly crossed the ball from the left side and found the head of Morse, who placed the ball into the bottom left corner of the net to put the Purple Knights up 1-0.
  • Wahlen shot the ball toward the upper part of the net from the top of the 18 in the 22nd minute, but Vallatini was there to punch the ball over the crossbar for a corner kick.
  • A corner kick in the 25th minute by junior Melanie Roberge (Chester, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) bounced out to Donnelly, whose shot went wide right of the net.
  • In the 33nd minute, Wahlen found space up the right side of the box and crossed the ball in to Lamb, who redirected the cross into the bottom right corner of the net to tie the game for the Owls.
  • With just under five minutes to play in the first half, first-year Julia Rosano (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) had a breakaway off of a missed header by the Owls, and Rosano dribbled into the box and shot but Smith dove to her left to deny a goal.
  • In the 79th minute, Donnelly dribbled through a few defenders and found an open junior Tess McCabe (Cataumet, Mass./Bourne), whose shot went wide right of the net.
  • During the 81st minute, Spencer chipped a pass up to a streaking Morse, but Smith came charging out of her net and dove on the ball to stop the Purple Knight advance.
  • In the 86th minute, first-year Rileigh Cinquegrano's (North Andover, Mass./North Andover) shot hit the crossbar and went straight down just outside the goal line, and Smith was there to collect the ball and deny a rebound.
  • A little more than two minutes into overtime, first-year Jordyn Morey (Chelmsford, Mass./Lowell Catholic) crossed the ball in from the right side, with Smith punching it away, but Spencer was in perfect position to settle the loose ball and drive a shot into the back of the net for the win at 92:17.
