Women's Ice Hockey Falls to Sacred Heart in First NEWHA Game of the New Year

SHELTON, Conn. - The Saint Michael's College women's ice hockey team fell to New England Women's  Hockey Alliance (NEWHA) foe Sacred Heart University, 4-1, on Friday at the Sports Center of Connecticut in the first game of a weekend series.

  • The game had a score of 2-1 until 6:16 into the third period when Pioneers extended the lead.

THE ACTION

  • The Pioneers scored first with 8:28 gone in the first period when Lupone found the back of the net off a pass by first-year Cassandra Nevers.
  • Twenty-five seconds after the Pioneer goal, the Purple Knights went down the ice and tied the game after a shot by first-year Jordan Lettiere (Hull, Mass./Middlesex Islanders) went wide, and Kennard shot the puck past Walewski with 8:53 down.
  • Sacred Heart took back the lead 17:11 into the period on a shot by Lewis that got past Simons.
  • In a scoreless second period, Simons stopped all nine shots by the Pioneers, including shutting down a shot by Bishop and the rebound from sophomore Samantha Shoebottom four minutes into the period.
  • With 6:16 gone in the third period, Bishop scored a shorthanded goal to put the Pioneers up two.
  • Lewis scored the Pioneers' fourth goal 17:07 into the period with an assist coming from junior Jordan Sanislo.
